Server Unavailable

Yesterday the emby app on my Chromecast with Google TV 4k stopped launching my Desktop server. A select server screen comes up instead. When I click on the server an error message comes up saying

"Server Unavailable. The server Desktop cannot be reached. It may no longer be available. Would you like to wake or remove it?"

I have manually entered the server's address, I have fixed the local IP Address for the Emby Server machine, I opened the port on the firewall and did a virus scan. I have a VPN but not on my router. I do use a VPN. I'm not sure if this is causing any issues. Everything was working fine until yesterday. I was on the brink of getting Premiere until this happened.

I know there is probably more I could be doing. I'm just getting a bit lost so I thought I would reach out.

Thanks in advance.

Did you have a windows update ?

Is your network connection set to private ?

Can you reach the server via browser on you server ? (  http:\\127.0.0.1:8086 )

Did you VPN client software update ?

Does it work when VPN software is turned off ?

Hi there. I have no Windows update. My network is set to public. I can access the server from a browser on my PC. My VPN is updated. From a browser on my S22 I can access the server. When I go to the emby app on my S22 I get a message saying "The emby server needs to be updated. To download the latest version, please visit etc". As far as I know, everything is updated. I cannot access the server on my Chromecast whether the VPN is on or off.

Try setting you server network to private, and see if that helps.

Still nothing. It's such a shame. I hope I don't have to go back to Plex. Thanks for your help.

It began yesterday afternoon. Apologies if I haven't provided the right logs. The issues persist so I thought the current logs would be relevant. It's the main PC that I use. Not a NAS setup or anything like that. I put it to sleep over a shutdown mostly. The PC is awake just to be clear.

Can you try turning off IPv6 in your nic.

I have seen that causing trouble.

It doesn't seem to have any effect. I should add that it doesn't seem to take when I try to alter those settings. When I go back into the drop down it says it's automatic like it was before. I'm not sure if that's just how it operates, though.

Hmm strange.

Ok last thing, have you tries rebooting the server ?

Other wise I'm out of ideas.

You could disable it this way too.

I did try rebooting the server. It just endlessly loops saying "it may take a couple of minutes" but remains on the same screen. I'll try it that way, thanks. I'm going to give it a rest and go back and try everything again later if you've run out of suggestions. I hope I can get it sorted eventually. It's such a great media server. I was looking forward to getting Premiere.

How about you router, has that been rebooted.

Mine some times act up.

Hi.  Are you sure you changed this to Private?

Have you checked your firewall for rules that could be blocking?

I restarted my router, but the issue remains. I also reinstalled the Emby app on the Chromecast with no result. My network is set to public, but I tried setting it to private for good measure, with no luck.

I've included a screenshot of the server info. I blurred it because that's what people seem to do. I'm not sure how helpful that makes it though.

Edit -  When I click on the Remote (WAN) access Chrome says "the website cannot be reached". The IP address looks strange too. I'm not an expert on this. I'm just trying to report what might help you folks.

That LAN ip looks like its IPv6.

Is your router handing out ipv6 dhcp addresses ?

I went into my router settings. This is what the status was.

Thats only for your internet access.

You would need to look at DHCP settings for your LAN.

Thanks for all your help, everyone.

I cannot get this working. It's getting to the point where I'm starting to miss my VHS player from the 90s. It's such a shame as I liked what I used of emby so much. I wouldn't have put so much effort into getting something to work unless I loved it. I'll probably be back on again at 3 am to try and sort it out again. I'm sure my poor attempt at resolving this has been a culprit too.

I don't want to celebrate too early. I've got it going. I installed the latest beta and it started working again. I'm seriously anxious it will flake out on me again. However, after using Plex for the last 30 minutes even if emby doesn't work via the Chromecast app I may use it from my PC. I would like to know if this is wise. I have my main PC hooked up to my TV via HDMI. Is this preferable over remote playing over wifi via my Chromecast? I'm considering upgrading my Chromecast to the new one with the ethernet port. Is this a good investment?
