Apple TV video fails to play with "Play On Another Device"

Yes, It happens with normal library content.

As posted previously, "It has nothing to do with the plugin", "It happens with and without the plugin installed on the server" with normal content as I said in my examples of how to reproduce the issue 100% of the time. Like I said, I only mentioned that it affects the plugin to get it out there that the play-on issue affects other things down the line.

I setup a clean test instance today (without the plugins) and I get the same results where when watching movie ABC on the Apple TV and using my phone and clicking play with "play on" to watch movie ZYX instead stops what is playing on the apple TV but does not begin playing what I clicked on. I have to press play again (a second time) after movie ABC stops playing... Also tested with trying to change the content on the apple tv using different browsers firefox and brave (chromium) on android, linux and windows from the play-on devices.

Emby AppleTV 1.9.1 (1)

Emby Server 4.8.10.0 (Linux)

tvOS 18.1     (on all 3 of my different TV's)

It switches fine when using android tv and the Emby Theater app. for my TV. But Apple tv it just stops playing but doesn't pick up playing the movie i want to switch it to...

What phone and app version are you using on that device? Can you try “play on” from the web client on a pc?

edit: sorry just saw the end of your last comment.

I’ll try again but I’m surprised it’s so repeatable for you but no issues here.
I presume this is all on the local network.

I tried doing the "play on" from my googled android phone and e/OS degoogled andriod phone and tablet using both firefox and the emby app 3.4.20. I also tried the Samsung browser on the google android samsung galaxy phone. As for my PC I tried using firefox and brave browsers using linux fedora, linux ubuntu, linux mint, and windows 10 from my primary PC. I also tried using firefox on my laptop which is linux fedora and my friends laptop running windows 11 a few days ago. Everything works just fine except the apple tv devices and they all mirror the same results. I can even use "play on" just fine between all those devices, apps & browsers and they function as expected, except when trying to change the content playing on the apple tv from any of those devices....  

Edit: I also used the Emby Theater app on my linux PC using several different distros and that is whatever the current flatpak version is.

Honestly, I have never been able to get the "play on" selection to show anything other than the web browser I am actually using at the time so I cant really help troubleshoot. I use Safari exclusively if that matters

Thanks for looking in to it. Your problem normally indicates that websockets are blocked. Are you running a reverse proxy?

No, Straight up simple networking. No firewalls or fancy setting at all.

My family has settled on an Apple TV for our media streamer and with all the HDR issues that seem cant be fixed we have moved back to Plex unfortunately. I still have Emby running but I dont believe I have VirtualTV installed at the moment. Let me get it back on there and see if I still seeing the same no other players available issue.

The Play To feature in the browser isn't tied to the plugin, but if you could install VirtualTV again and create a single channel with Playlist (Live) playback mode, that would help a lot. You'll have to test channel playback on an AppleTV and some other device, preferable an Android device if you have one.

Reinstalled VirtualTV and recreated the steps in the 1st post and everything worked as expected.

Thank you so much! Just to be very sure, because the steps in the first post are for the "Play To" feature without using VirtualTV (they mimic what VirtualTV is doing internally)...

So strange that you guys are not having issues. I even put together another clean-install of fedora server on an out-of-service machine I had laying around and installed a fresh copy of Emby-Server with default settings and I get the same results as before on all 3 of my apple tv's where Play-On just does not begin playing another movie IF I have something ALREADY playing on the apple tv. It just stops what is ALREADY playing but does not begin playing the new thing i want to watch.

Maybe I will try to factory reset one of my tv's again. I did that once before but its such a pain to restore everything again on those tv's.  It plays fine from both my servers using any of the other devices except the apple tv's since a few updates ago and only stopped one at a time when each tv updated the app. (ie. bedroom was the last to update and it worked there when the other tvs did not), so who knows.

Factory reset didn't change anything on my apple tv device. It still does not work for me lol. Now I have to reinstall everything & log back into everything lol.

Actually no and I just posted another comment pertaining exactly to this issue. The test i did for you was exactly per the very first post. I can’t get Playlist (Live) to work on my Apple TV at all.

I sure did didnt I!

I didnt realize at the time that I didnt even have Emby installed on my Apple TV so there was nothing available to "play on" obviously.

ok, it sounds like you are unfortunately having the same issue I am then @hstamas. I was starting to think I was crazy for a moment there lol.

@SamES3 of my TVs are the A1842 2017 models running tvOS 18.2 currently and 1 tv is the A1625 2015 also on tvOS 18.2. I also have a friend that gets the same results using Apple TV 4k 2020.
