DLNA, Samsung TV and Transcoding - nothing makes sense

Hi to all,

I have a 2023 Samsung TV (QN85C) which no longer works with the Synology DLNA.  I have tried Emby as an alternative DLNA server, which is seen but the TV, however, transcoding is making it impossible to use.

The problem is that whether it transcodes files or not appears to be completely random.  Files that it direct played perfectly the day before are now unwatchable as they are being transcoded.

I have searched the forum for information about this and there seems to be a huge amount of confusion about where settings are.  It seems that you cannot simply turn off transcoding, which would be the simple solution in my case!

I have also modified the direct play settings in the DLNA profiles and they seem to have just made it even worse.  There does not appear to be any logic as to what it transcodes and doesn't.  I have even tried the same file in 2 different library folders and one transcodes and the other direct plays!

What is the correct way to setup Emby to work with a Samsung 2023 Television and direct play supported media without this random transcoding?

Charles,

Maybe transcoding starts because Emby doesn't always see the same confirmation that the speed and codec playback will be fine from the TV.  I would guess the TV is responding differently to the same media, due to different 'time out' situations from the TV.  Any delay from the TV's side, which could be from just switching channels, to whatever background issue, stops the TV from confirming the connection is fast and correct and Emby senses this as a need to start transcoding.  I've read that TV's even have security settings to inhibit incoming media streams that are not approved.  TV manufacturers do this to limit pirate type media access and make sure that approved networks like Netflix and Prime can get through without conflicts.  They probably had a lot of support calls and maybe pressure to lock out some media streams.  I have a low opinion of TV's being able to easily accept incoming media streams via Wifi or Ethernet.  I think the easiest solution is to get a plug-in box and don't rely on built in network App on the TV.  I use Onn box which gives you a lot of RAM memory and HD for $20 from Walmart.
