blgentry 51 Posted September 12, 2024 Posted September 12, 2024 It seems like all of the focus of the Emby team is for mobile clients. The AndroidTV app appears to have had the last release 3 years ago. The client for AppleTV seems quite far behind as well. Will Emby for AndroidTV be developed any further? How about Emby for AppleTV? They both appear to be abandoned. Perhaps I'm not the person that Emby is being developed for. I watch Emby content on a TV. I need a set top box client. I'm planning for the day when the client stops working. I'd like to have a clear path forward. Thanks, Brian.

Andriod TV client app is in maintenance releases-only mode, it will eventually be superseded by Standard/Universal Andriod app, though clear sunset timeline has not been disclosed yet, it's somewhat of a gray area at present time. Luke 42078 Posted September 13, 2024 Posted September 13, 2024 Hi there! Emby for Apple TV and Android are constantly updated !
blgentry 51 Posted September 13, 2024 Author Posted September 13, 2024 I hope the Android and AppleTV versions achieve similar capabilities to the AndroidTV version. The AppleTV version seems very basic. The Android version is a lot further along. I wonder if the Android version will have letters to scroll to titles by their first letter. Again all of the focus seems to be on mobile. Why is the focus on mobile? Do most of Emby's customers watch only on mobile devices? I would think set top boxes would be the focus for a product that plays movies. Thanks, Brian.

Not sure why you're saying that, as there was a release at the end of July for Beta and the end of August for Stable. Current version is v2.1.21. There is a big discussion thread here about the differences between the Android TV app and the Universal Android app, well over 100 pages. Thanks. Edited September 13, 2024 by CBers

Can you elaborate on that, as I see no issues with alpha-picker (depending on library type/view and sort order).

The release notes have no date on them. The forum post says "updated in 2021". If "29 August" means August of 2024, that's good news. The release notes should probably be presented in a way that makes this obvious. Thanks for the link to the 100 page thread. I"m not sure if I'll have the energy to read very much of it. That's an enormous amount of history to sift through. I'm happy to hear that the AndroidTV version has at least been given minor updates recently (a couple of months ago). That's way better than what I originally thought, again based on there not being dates on the release notes.

Thank you for directing me back to the app to go check. As you said, the Android version has an "alpha-picker" that functions properly. My opinion of the Android app is marred because it is locked and I can only use it to browse or to preview (1 minute) videos. I would purchase a 1 time license for it, but that option is not currently available. My memory of no alpha-picker is from the AppleTV app. It is very surprising to see the early development state of the AppleTV version of Emby, as compared to a phone app for Android. I keep asking this, but why are you only concentrating on phone apps? Does that make some kind of business sense? Are your subscribers all watching on phones?

I was not even aware there was a beta release, or what capabilities it might have, or how to use it. The version on my client is 2.1.14(g). That seems to be relatively current. Knowing that was released this year makes me feel more at ease about the availability of the AndroidTV version of Emby. Thanks, Brian.
