Random/Shufle photos selects only about 100 pictures

Hi there,

I currently have Emby version 4.8.8.0 installed on my Synology NAS, and I use the Emby app to stream content to my Roku.

When I access my 10,000-photo library, choose the "Sort by Random" option, and then click the play button on the Roku, it only selects about 100 pictures to play in a loop instead of playing all the pictures randomly. As a result, I have to reshuffle and play another batch of 100 images.

Please let me know if I'm doing something wrong, and if there's a way to enable a true random feature for all my pictures.

Hi.  Are you sure about that?  The latest app should be selecting 750 images at a time.

Maybe 750, I don't know how many. It doesn't tell me how many were selected. Is there any way I can see how many were selected, and is there a way to configure how many to choose?

Just be aware that photo functionality has taken a seat on the back of the bus for Emby. Some things work well some things work passably and many things dot not work at all. Photos are barely supported in Emby ad that makes sense as most people use Emby for TV and movies and other video. I wish photo functionality was better but i am quite happy photos work at all and, every time I see a photo question that Emby will change things so i lose the functionality I use or, even worse for me, they decided to remove photo support completely. I like what I have and i am often concerned about losing it.

Wow, that's said. That's what I realized: Emby is more movie-focused. Is there a better alternative to viewing photos on Roku? Thank you.

I am pretty sure there is but I have not found one that was worth putting the effort and money (most seem to require new/different hardware) into making them work. Aside from Plex, which I absolutely will never use, everything I have found is aimed at professional photo users but all I want/need is the ability to display and play my photos as easily as I can movies and TV.

Emby is great but photos are not a strength for Emby, at least yet. There is always hope, until there is not.

Exactly what do you want in a photo viewer for Roku? Right now the photo player is very limited. But we can improve this. It is quite possible to provide a better experience but users have not complained about this section in quite some time.

 

I know of one PhotoViewer on the Roku that presents itself sort of like this shown above. This interface allows you to do a bit more. Has a photo roll and some other stuff. But is this what you guys want?

Do you need animated transitions between photos? Animation effects like viewing Amazon photos on an Echo?

How exactly do we create something useful and where would be the place we need to start in your opinion?

If you are asking me I would like for photos on the Roku to stay exactly as it is. I generally do not like change.
I am not the one to ask about photos as I appear to use my photos very very differently than most people. I would like the web interface to catch up with the Roku on photo display and use. I am very hesitant to ask for change as that often results in me losing something. Like I lost the photo alphapicker in the web interface for photo folders when I asked for it to be added to the photo view.. Please don't remove that on the Roku.

We aren't going to remove anything. But would like to improve the experience to bring it to par like other services are doing. The way Apple TV handles them and how Amazon shows them with animated transitions.

I didn't at all mean removing anything from the grid in regards to photos. We are not going to be doing that. We won't be making any changes to the grid from how it presently functions unless it is to make it have more functionality. Such as the missing "filters" option on the grid. That is planned for the future.

I meant improving the experience inside the Emby photoviewer itself. Right now it is pretty minimal because of the Roku remote control lacking buttons. There are no on screen elements to take focus and the user can interact with as the photos are displayed. There is no OSD on the PhotoViewer.

Very curious what users are wanting to see as improvements within the photoviewer.

It would be awesome if you could improve the photo viewer. Here are some of the things I would like to have:

1. Allow the playlist to play. Right now, it doesn't work for photos
2. Random/shuffle should shuffle and play all photos, not 750, or at least it should be configured.
3. When I navigate to the folder with multiple subfolders by pressing shuffle, it should play all photos from all subfolders. Right now, I need to navigate to the folder and only play pictures in that folder; I can't start playing from the parent folder.
4. Ability to select what to show when a picture plays, for instance, the file's name, year, or some other metadata.
5. Ability to configure how long to show the picture
6. As you mentioned above, transition effects.

This is just a start.

By the way, I tried Plex, and I can tell you I love Emby more for its much cleaner interface and simplicity.
