It looks like Samsung will now be updating the OS version for 7 years starting with 2024 TVs (and some 2023s) with firmware updates.  Previously all they sent out was security updates/patches and the only way to get the newer Tizen OS version was to buy a new TV every year when the Tizen version also changed.

Just knowing the TV year when having issues will not be enough anymore as things always change with every Tizen version.

Wonder if this will affect app updates also.  Thinking maybe the OS version is how they determine the age of a TV and how they control which TVs get updates by its Tizen version when logged into the Samsung store.

At least that's how it used to work when they made Evolution Kits.  If you upgraded, then your TV was considered the updated year's version, and you got an extra year of updates.

For the Tizen version the developer's page has that.  You can start digging around here

https://developer.samsung.com/smarttv/develop/tools/tv-extension/release-history.html

For the small firmware updates you can usually find that on your TVs support page at Samsung, or the below link has them

Nothing has changed in the developer portal. We can still only submit for 2020 and up. But with any luck maybe they can be pressured into it.

Ya, it only started with 2024 TVs, so wouldn't expect it to affect anything older.  Wouldn't see any change until 2029, if at all.

Plus, how do they know how old your TV is when you log into the Samsung store?  They used to go by Tizen version to determine the year of your TV.  For instance, I bought a 2017 Evolution Kit for my 2013 TV and the Samsung store then thought I had a 2017 TV and I got updates for it through 2017.  With this new change your Tizen version would change every year for 7 years now.

Well they know what model it is. We'll have to just wait and see how this shakes out. Currently when we submit packages we are doing them for model years and families and not based on the tizen version.

Okay, if nothing else it will only affect some of @SamES programming code which uses Tizen version in some cases.  A model year may or may not always be a certain Tizen version X if upgraded.

Correct, that is the issue and we already face this issue with LG where we’ve had to start decoding the model number when they allowed non-DTS models to upgrade OS to versions which had DTS models.  What made this worse is that not all models in the supported model year support DTS so even OS version wasn’t enough even before that allowed OS upgrades

These platforms need to have native methods to determine whether DTS, ATMOS and other features are available on the device.

Samsung’s 7-year Tizen OS upgrade is great for longevity and security. This ensures better performance, new features, and improved live streaming support over time.
