N100 - Windows or Linux?

Recommended Posts

In an attempt to quieten my Synology NAS down, I'm going to migrate Emby (Synology package) and all my docker containers (arrs, Cloudflare tunnels etc etc) to a N100 mini PC and use the NAS purely for media storage. This should significantly reduce the drive noise on my NAS, plus handle transcoding better.

Is there a preferred OS for the mini PC? Easier migration if using Linux? Better resource management?

Thanks for any advice...

Not sure as I believe either scenario media paths will change so library migrations will be problematic.   Unless the shares can/will remain the same as it will be dependent on how they are setup now.

But will come back to which ever platform you are the most comfortable with.

I am using a N100 myself and it's running on Ubuntu LTS (still 22.04, need to do the upgrade). No issue so far, transcodes everything I throw at it.

Can't compare to Windows though as it never ran on it.

Thanks. Yes, this will probably take some time and experimentation, but I have plenty of time at the moment :) Long term benefits should be good though.

Thanks, I'm leaning towards the Ubuntu route too.

As a follow up to this I ended up going the windows route. I just couldn't get sonarr/radarr working correctly on Linux and docker, just couldn't work out the permissions for copying stuff to the Nas. Much easier, for me, to mount the Nas over the network in Windows.

The are suite works well natively in Windows, got cloudflared tunnels working, so far so good
