No compatible streams are currently available -- only when on LAN

I am getting the following error only when I am on LAN, but not when I am connecting remotely.
Oddly, I see in the server settings only my server's LAN IP, so I'm not even sure how it knows how to route to my server.

I am able to browse my library just fine either way, only the playback is what is giving an error on LAN.

I made two separate attempts at playing the content while on my network, they can be seen here.

I am able to play this and any other content outside my network with no issues. This only happens on iPhone app, I'm able to play from my LAN PC and multiple TVs as well without issue, so this issue is exclusive to iPhone on LAN.

Did not have an issue with a quick test in 2.2.29 everything was direct playing.

I was able to play content from my 'Music' library, trying to find a common denominator of which content can't play. The oddest thing to me is I flip off the WiFi on my phone and the content will play with no issue.

Can only assume different playback methods but would need logs or verification per example.  But my test was on beta (improve video playback) and you are on current release 2.2.28.  So I don't know if there was a fix specific to your issue.

Possibly interesting additional bit of info -- the one that works generates a transcode, due to being on cellular data it can't pull the full quality. There is an ffmpeg-transcode log created when I connect outside of LAN. This is not created when I am on LAN, but that might be just because the playback never starts.

Also, here's another log where I played both methods (on LAN and off network) bac k to back a few times, perhaps something here may be helpful.

Let me know if anything else I can test would be helpful. If there’s another version I could download to test as well to see if this is a version bug or otherwise.

Thank you.

Is the issue limited to Emby for iOS?

From my testing, yes. I have LG, Android, Android TV, Shield, also tried from the same phone using Safari instead of the iOS app. None of those have experienced the issue.

Also just to reiterate this only happens on WiFi. Connecting from outside my network or over cellular, all titles play without issue.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

I see 2.2.29 available as of 2h ago. I was able to get that one, but the problem remains unfortunately.
Is there another way I can get 2.2.30 to try?

When you actually start the app, does it say 2.2.29 inside the app, or 2.2.30?

After any reboot of macOS Sequoia (15.0) the Emby app will fail to play media from an emby server on the same LAN until the Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network > Emby setting is toggled off and on again (despite being set to on to start with). In other words, this Local Network access permission seems to be forgotten on each reboot (even though the macOS UI shows it as turned on) and toggling this off and on again reapplies the permission so the Emby app can work as usual.

Also, if Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network > Emby is turned off, the Emby app crashes (rather than prompting that Local Network access permission is required).

@Mac18  @podonnellis this also the reason for your issue?

Negative, I think these settings are specific to the macOS app? I can't find these sections in my Dashboard.

Further, I think I said this before but if not, this is a key point -- I am able to play all files from my Music library, but unable to play any items in Movies and Series.

So this issue is specific to on-LAN access to Movies & Series for me.

Hi @Luke, No its different issue, its on my Iphone. Everything has been resolved by updating on latest version of emby app. to 2.2.30, on ios18

@Mac18@podonnell - this issue may be affecting both iOS and macOS client Emby apps when accessing LAN content whilst on the LAN (but not via a VPN like Tailscale and not when access content in a folder or share on you local computer or phone). @podonnellthe settings I'm taking out are the Apple settings to allow the Emby app to access the Local Network.

In iOS 18 these are under the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad (Settings > Apps > Emby > Local Network). Installing iOS 18 required these settings to be re-accepted to allow Network Access (and the iOS app works properly once this is done - but without it the app cannot access media over the local network but can via a VPN etc).

In macOS 15 these settings are in the macOS system settings under Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network > Emby. As per iOS Local Network access needs to be allowed otherwise the macOS Emby app cannot access media over the local network. The trouble with the macOS Emby app is that (1) if the Local Network access permission in macOS is turned off, the app will crash when trying to play network content; and (2) after any reboot you need to toggle this setting off and on again to get it to properly apply (otherwise you get the "no compatible streams" message when trying to play media over the local network (but local / VPN access continue to work without issue).

Oh!!!! This fixed it. I was looking on the server side for some reason when you made your first post.

As soon as I switched this on, it let me watch content locally.

It was perplexing because I could still play videos from my ‘Music’ library.

Nevertheless, this fixed it. TYSM!
