OK, to be sure the box could read something, I made some standard converted movies. I took one video and made 6 different converted targets (a mix of mp4, mkv, mpeg, h264, aac, mp3). Then I took an usb card and try reading it on the box. Surprise, each one could be read.

So came back on dlna and none could be read. It jumps from one to one until it reaches the end of the list.
The last thing I can see in my tcp catch is

I guess the last video tried in mpeg and nothing else. So strange.

Then maybe you can add them to the direct play profiles and avoid the transcoding?

well... that's exactly what I though, but it's not working 🥴 Unless I made a mistake ?

OK, I made it work through plexmediaserver 😶. And I clearly don't understand why emby does not go well.

here what I have in emby :
image.jpeg.c284a4ee32754a5db552d724b6ab432b.jpegimage.jpeg.a53170a77c94020dba978cb5de967671.jpeg

and here is what I have in my plexmedia xml profile

    <!-- Forcing transcode for every codec -->

    <TranscodeTargets>

        <VideoProfile container="mpegts" codec="mpeg2video" audioCodec="pcm">

            <MediaConditions>

                <AllowDirectPlay>false</AllowDirectPlay> <!-- Disables DirectStream -->

            </MediaConditions>

        </VideoProfile>

    </TranscodeTargets>

what's the difference ?

OK what if you try aac instead of pcm?

exactly the same, impossible to read the file....

Hi, today I noticed a new thing, perhaps important.

If I try emby on the box (and fail), just after plexmediaserver is not working either. I have then to reboot the box. I don't understand why... All this is mystery 🤔

Posted

Have you tried with another dlna device to see how things compare?

Posted (edited)

well, I tryed with an iPhone, a computer, a firestick amz, an iPad and  none of them have trouble.

Just now, I tcpdump between emby server and the app emby on iPhone and did not notice anything;..

I also tried with jellyfin and I got the same result. my box is not working with it...

Is it the same error with plex, or something different?

Same error. The box says “can’t read the file format”

I suspect the video or audio codec could be causing the issue.  Even h.264 video can have playback issues if it has been compiled from .ts files and not yet remuxed.  Also PCM is has at least 9 different audio types.  see: https://www.electronicshub.org/pulse-code-modulation-in-audio/

Playback audio via the USB only proves that the hardware / software accepting media via the USB is setup to playback the particular version of PCM correctly.  It's a completely different route to take to playback your media audio through Ethernet or Wifi.  It's sort of like saying, "but I can get into the back door of my car, so the driver's side door should work."

Try these tests one at a time:

  1. Download a test file and see if that play's back correctly. https://www.h264info.com/?page_id=20
  2. Try remuxing the video with command line: MP4box or full ffmpeg install, AVIdemux.
  3. Remux the video and change the audio from PCM to AAC (LC no higher than 192 or HE-AAC any bitrate)
  4. Try re-encoding the video codec as well to AVC x264.

If any of these steps work, then you know that your media is not working for your video streaming path.  It's possible that some adjustment might allow your media to play back.  If none of the above tests work, than the answer lies with adjusting the playthrough better for your media and streaming path.  My guess is that numbers 1 or 3 alone would work, which means it is your media that has the problem.

Hope that helps.

Do you have any other dlna devices to use for comparison purposes?

Yes Like fire stick Amazon. And they work.

Hi, sorry for the late review. (too much things to do).

 @Luke@visproduction I tried everything (or nearly) and it stills not working. Strange.
Thanks for your help anyway. I also tryed to quickly develop a server in c# (thanks Chatgpt XD ) to check a little further.(Without success)
So for me, by now, Plexmedia is working, with a little restriction, I must reboot the videoTV box otherwise I get the same error as emby.

(I don't know how to close this thread as there is no solution...)

@Fjunillonbut don't you want a personal media server and not one that stores all of your personal information in the cloud?

Can you give it another try?

I’d love to but have no direction to go 😬 may be I can compare logs between both software to understand the difference ?

ok, let's go back.
If I don't make any specific profile, I get no play with default.
So this time, I took the xml profile I made for plex media and "translate" to emby. you'll see the attach file for it. But nothing is playing (among a lot of movies)
I also attach the result log here.
192.168.1.200 is the server
192.168.1.9 is the video box
Could you please take a look please and tell me if I made something stupid ? I really don't find any clue nor any error message...
thanks a lot :)

I would delete this custom profile from the server. Using * is not valid in Emby Server, so that will lead to unpredictable results.

Do you have any basic mp4's with h264? are you able to play those?

I don't understand, what do you mean by delete the custom profile ? remove the xml file ?

yes of course I have basic files and there are not playing.

What type of files?

a lot of different. nothing seems to work. But I noticed a strange thing. I simplified the profile to reject any direct play, and translate to h264/aac.
As you can see in the log, the video box (192.168.1.9) is well recognize and the profile applied. But when asking for a read, I don't find any trace as I can find when I try on another device like a firetv key or a computer, just like that was just forbidden or refused.
I also tryed this without any luck

<ProtocolInfoDetection>
<EnabledForVideo>true</EnabledForVideo>
