nagetech 69 Posted August 28, 2024 Posted August 28, 2024 (edited) Howdy Team Emby! Going to have some upgrades on my server soon, and need to plan something out, with some pointers if possible. Presently emby resides in it's default installation direction in windows under the AppData folder on the boot drive which is an SSD. I'm going to add a m.2 NVME drive to the system and would like to migrate the whole emby directory over to said m.2 NVME drive. The SSD will remain as the boot drive. It is in a r730 server setup as a RAID 1 config. What are best practices to essentially switch the emby installation directory while successfully maintaining auto updates and auto start in windows? I don't use it as a service, just standard startup. Thanks ahead of time! Edit: Added more details about my request. Edited August 28, 2024 by nagetech
Luke 42079 Posted August 28, 2024 Posted August 28, 2024 Hi there, have you taken a look at this? Configuration Backup
nagetech 69 Posted August 28, 2024 Author Posted August 28, 2024 Yes I'm sorry I wasn't clear. The SSD Boot drive isn't going anywhere. What I want to do was migrate emby from the SSD to the m.2 NVME that I will be adding to the system.
nagetech 69 Posted August 29, 2024 Author Posted August 29, 2024 Is it as simple as closing emby, and moving the fold from the AppData Folder to the new NVME drive, and fire it back up from there?

For 99.9% for everything yes it will be that easy. May be those outliars that point to something on the C:/ path if you ever applied a path in a plugin or within Emby but with it not going anywhere it should be seemless. Pretty sure you will have to update firewall rules or reset system.xml <IsPortAuthorized>true</IsPortAuthorized> to false before starting Emby and the script will remove and readd them.
nagetech 69 Posted August 30, 2024 Author Posted August 30, 2024 Thanks for the input @Happy2Play I was concerned if I did that, I would be missing a few steps to ensure auto updates and it auto starting on boot still worked without issue. I know how to change paths for emby folders like metadata & cache, so no sweat there. I suppose there's something to be said about simplicity, being able to move emby like this is much better than a complicated reintall. Cheers!

I have just started to use Emby coming from Plex. I tried your tip but all new recording still go the default in user appdata etc... I do have directries on the data drive and they are configured in Emby but Emby always creates the same path and location in Emby. This is a no go for my setup as I have small boot disk and larger data disk, not NAS, just physically attached storage.

What platform but I will assume you need to manually configure Metadata/Transcoding-Temp/Cache and Recordings to custom paths per there setup pages. Cache is Settings page Metadata is Library-Advanced tab Transcoding-Temp is Transcoding page Recording is Live-TV-Advanced tab And all these places would have to be manually reconfigured/or manually updated in database as I don't think they are file driven anymore but not positive.
jimbrandon8056 0 Posted September 25, 2024 Posted September 25, 2024 So sorry, Windows 10, default direcdtory structor and installation. Only change is the data drive\directory. I did change the cache path. I do not use transcoding so I have set to no. I did finally change the default recording directory. I have changed the metadata path to the recording directroy. So now, to try it out... Thank you so much, I was alread grey haired but this made me loose a few!!

Sounds like you should technically use the portable instead of installer and put the entire install wherever you like.
