MKV playback audio is Stereo Only

Recommended Posts

When I rip a movie to MKV, Emby is playing it back as just a 2chnl source, despite me making the selection in the attached pic. Is there some setting on the server I need to change?

Ripped movies are on the Emby Server PC.  They are viewed via WMC PC, but the server is doing the playback and the WMC PC is the interface.

I used to use AnyDVD for my rips (ripped to the native folder structure and played back on WMC PC using TMT6), but now that AnyDVD is gone I am trying my hand with MakeMKV and letting the server do the playback.

If I play the file on my Main PC via VLC, it shows the MKV file as 5.1 :

What is shown in Emby for mediainfo? That has more details that what VLC is showing. It looks like one of the audio streams is 5.1 and the other might only be stereo but the VLC info doesn't provide that information. It says 5.1 in the description, but the description could say anything.

What Emby client are you playing in?  But probably need to see the server/ffmpeg log for a specific example.

I see some strange entries for the playback stop and start reporting but I also see an error indicating the streams were null much later in the log (couldn't read due to permission denied?), which is why I wanted to see the metadata of the item from within Emby.

Quote

System.Exception: System.Exception: ffprobe failed for file:"\\SERVER\4TB hdd-5\MOVIES\Immaculate (2024)\Immaculate_t00.mkv" - streams and format are both null:

Where would I view the meta for this movie on the server?  Would I go to Libraries, find the movie and it will be there?

Not sure why it failed the first time do to permission but succeeded the second time.

2024-08-27 14:37:01.331 Info MediaProbeManager: ProcessRun 'ffprobe' Execute: C:\Users\SERVER\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\system\ffprobe.exe -i file:"\\SERVER\4TB hdd-5\MOVIES\Immaculate (2024)\Immaculate_t00.mkv" -threads 0 -v info -print_format json -show_streams -show_chapters -show_format -show_data
2024-08-27 14:37:01.410 Info MediaProbeManager: ProcessRun 'ffprobe' Process exited with code 0 - Succeeded

But not sure as you appear to be using external player.

What media info is shown for the item?

Is there a reason you on still on such a old version?

Yes at the bottom of the medias page.

I'm using the most recent version of the server that still works with Win7 WMC. I just LOVE the different themes which I take FULL advantage of in order to tailor the UI to my liking. It's perfect to me!

I deleted all the logs then started all over again as to clean up the info in the logs. I turned on the HTPC, started the Emby app from WMC, navigated to the movie in question (my first MKV) and played a few seconds of it.

I went into Libraries, then to that movie, but could not find any audio spec info?? I checked another movie (a bluray rip) and also did not see any audio info displayed in Metadata,  I did take a screenshot of the movie's entry on the HTPC and it does have a "5.1" badge.

Can you look at the item details in the web app instead?

I don't use the app on my phone since I have my server locked down to just my LAN.  I did however download it to see if it shows something different than the 5.1 from the HTPC UI.  Unfortunately, it would connect since my Server version is 4.7.6.0.  It wants me to upgrade the server version before proceeding.

No not a mobile app, the web app is just the server address in your browser.

OK.

Tried it that way. No difference. When I go to "Edit Metadata", there is no info on the resolution or audio.

The screenshot shows that its 5.1 tho.

It should be at the bottom of the page like this:

Would appear to potentially be correct.

But since this is all WMC related on an old server may need someone with knowledge of WMC to comment and probably needs to be in the WMC section to get better visibility on the specific issue.

@arrbee99I see you commenting in the WMC UI (beta) you have any ideas here?

It should be correct, but that could just be the title that is set, which is why I want to see the metadata information. Especially since they've not used this program before I'm trying to see the details of what ended up being output. It looks like there are 2 audio tracks based on the VLC screenshot, but the other screenshot from Emby only seems to indicate one track.

Oh boy....Happy2Play got me pointed in the right direction.  It's RESOLVED.

The HTPC I built has no graphics card.  I use the on die graphics from Intel. I think it's HD700 Iris or something. There was an OBSCURE setting in the Intel IGP settings for Audio that said "Audio Through TV" or something like that. I changed it from Disabled to Enabled. When I started the MKV file, the Denon rcvr was now showing 5.1 chnls on the Input !!!!

What's confusing is that I never experienced this with DVD's or Blurays ripped to the Server.  Only noticed this when I ripped a bluray to MKV (vs. my standard of ripping to native folder structure).

Thanks guys for digging into this !!!!!!
