FrostByte 5392 Posted August 26, 2024 Posted August 26, 2024 This Surveillance Station update is what's taking forever.

FrostByte 5392 Posted August 26, 2024 Posted August 26, 2024 Looks like your log was using vaapi for hevc transcoding.

FrostByte 5392 Posted August 27, 2024 Posted August 27, 2024 Some further notes: Emby server transcoding seems to be working here also (software only) Surveillance Station required an update after the 7.2.2 DSM upgrade There is a new Surveillance Video Extension which allows Surveillance Station to continue to use AVC/h264. Also, if you used my script in the tutorials to allow WinSCP as a Super User you will have to rerun the script as the new DSM wiped out the changes made. 1

FrostByte 5392 Posted August 27, 2024 Posted August 27, 2024 (edited) Just ran these two commands in Terminal to check inotify values and everything looks good. So, if nothing else the script still works. cat /proc/sys/fs/inotify/max_user_instances cat /proc/sys/fs/inotify/max_user_watches Edited August 27, 2024 by FrostByte

Happy2Play 9780 Posted August 30, 2024 Posted August 30, 2024 So their remove of stuff is only affection their software. As their release notes made it look catastrophic. Quote Starting from this version, the processing of media files using HEVC (H.265), AVC (H.264), and VC-1 codecs will be transitioned from the server to end devices to reduce unnecessary resource usage on the system and enhance system efficiency. These codecs are widespread on end devices such as smartphones, tablets, computers, and smart TVs. If the end device does not support the required codecs, the use of media files may be limited.
DonMacaroni 54 Posted August 30, 2024 Posted August 30, 2024 (edited) @Happy2Playthey started phasing out various codecs long ago in Video Station, hence why I finally landed on Emby (After trying Plex and becoming overly dissapointed). Basically they compile their own ffmpeg, with features disabled/removed during compilation, at first solution was to use own custom compiled ffmpeg or community one, but Synology started to make it increasingly difficult to utilize third party one with their apps. As Emby bundles their own, it does not affect Emby HW transcoding...unless at some point they would drop GPU drivers. Still software transcoding would be possible, but due to fairly low level CPU's in Synology systems, it would be unfeasible. I personally think, that Qnap will gain lot of customers, since they do support adding GPU's by customers on their Ryzen NAS'es, still have transcoding capabilities, etc... DonMacaroni 54 Posted August 30, 2024 Posted August 30, 2024 Once, Synology had best software and their Hardware was subpar, while Qnap had poor software and good hardware... Now, it looks like, tides have turned, but Synology now also has subpar Software and their hardware is still, pretty low end.
heffeque 78 Posted August 30, 2024 Posted August 30, 2024 Only thing holding me to Synology right now is SHR. 1

SHR is actually nothing special, bunch of "helper" scripts...everything else is, standard lvm on top of mdraid. My next NAS will definitely not be Synology, quite a fed up with all of those removed features which have accumulated overtime. Edited August 30, 2024 by DonMacaroni 1
heffeque 78 Posted August 30, 2024 Posted August 30, 2024 (edited) Welp... It helped me a lot, that's for sure. Went from 4x6TB to 4x18TB (one disc at a time, obviously) on my DS918+ in just a few days with just a few clicks. Edited August 30, 2024 by heffeque 1

At least everything was accessible during the procedure
heffeque 78 Posted September 11, 2024 Posted September 11, 2024 (edited) Updated to 7.2.2 without issues (today a minor fix came out, FYI https://mariushosting.com/synology-dsm-7-2-2-72806/ ). Edited September 11, 2024 by heffeque 1
Audiomixer 374 Posted September 12, 2024 Posted September 12, 2024 Updated both my nas to 72806. Emby working as before. 1 1
hdsuisse 14 Posted October 8, 2024 Posted October 8, 2024 Same here, i update my Synology DS720+ to DSM 7.2.2-72806 and Emby works with hardware encoding as before. 1
Carlo 4560 Posted October 8, 2024 Posted October 8, 2024 Same for me as well, hardware transcoding working fine.
Dreakon13 143 Posted October 23, 2024 Posted October 23, 2024 (edited) Appreciate the input on this guys, made me feel better about updating to 7.2.2 when it and its warnings popped up this morning. HW transcoding is working for me as well (from H264 and HEVC). Edited October 23, 2024 by Dreakon13 1
Tremas 197 Posted October 23, 2024 Posted October 23, 2024 Yup, I also upgraded last week with no issues. Thanks again to the pioneers who took the plunge 1
