This Surveillance Station update is what's taking forever.

Ah. I have it installed. but it wasn't running at the time of update.

Looks like your log was using vaapi for hevc transcoding.

Pretty sure it is part of ffmpeg as shown in your server startup log.

Some further notes:

• Emby server transcoding seems to be working here also (software only)
• Surveillance Station required an update after the 7.2.2 DSM upgrade
• There is a new Surveillance Video Extension which allows Surveillance Station to continue to use AVC/h264.  

Also, if you used my script in the tutorials to allow WinSCP as a Super User you will have to rerun the script as the new DSM wiped out the changes made.

I'm guessing it probably did, but I have that script running at every bootup so it would have fixed then anyway.

Just ran these two commands in Terminal to check inotify values and everything looks good.  So, if nothing else the script still works.

cat /proc/sys/fs/inotify/max_user_instances
cat /proc/sys/fs/inotify/max_user_watches

Seems to work fine... using HW transcoding via QuickSync.

So their remove of stuff is only affection their software.  As their release notes made it look catastrophic.

@Happy2Playthey started phasing out various codecs long ago in Video Station, hence why I finally landed on Emby (After trying Plex and becoming overly dissapointed).

Basically they compile their own ffmpeg, with features disabled/removed during compilation, at first solution was to use own custom compiled ffmpeg or community one, but Synology started to make it increasingly difficult to utilize third party one with their apps.

As Emby bundles their own, it does not affect Emby HW transcoding...unless at some point they would drop GPU drivers. Still software transcoding would be possible, but due to fairly low level CPU's in Synology systems, it would be unfeasible.

I personally think, that Qnap will gain lot of customers, since they do support adding GPU's by customers on their Ryzen NAS'es, still have transcoding capabilities, etc...

Once, Synology had best software and their Hardware was subpar, while Qnap had poor software and good hardware...

Now, it looks like, tides have turned, but Synology now also has subpar Software and their hardware is still, pretty low end.

SHR is actually nothing special, bunch of "helper" scripts...everything else is, standard lvm on top of mdraid.

My next NAS will definitely not be Synology, quite a fed up with all of those removed features which have accumulated overtime.

Welp... It helped me a lot, that's for sure.

Went from 4x6TB to 4x18TB (one disc at a time, obviously) on my DS918+ in just a few days with just a few clicks.

Did the same on my 918+ too. Took 6 days for me. At least everything was accessible during the procedure

Updated to 7.2.2 without issues (today a minor fix came out, FYI https://mariushosting.com/synology-dsm-7-2-2-72806/ ).

Same here, i update my Synology DS720+ to DSM 7.2.2-72806 and Emby works with hardware encoding as before.

Appreciate the input on this guys, made me feel better about updating to 7.2.2 when it and its warnings popped up this morning.  HW transcoding is working for me as well (from H264 and HEVC).
