DSM 7.2.2

Hi @Luke

There's a new version of DSM out, DSM 7.2.2. Plex requires a new version of their software, as the current one doesn't work. Any idea whether the current stable and beta versions of Emby will be ok if this DSM update is installed?

What you don't want to be the first to try it out?

Release Notes for DSM | Synology Inc.

Looks like issues may be coming per the discussion on Reddit.

It looks like Synology is going to remove all decoding from the NAS (except Surveillance Station). Video Station is no longer available in the Package Center, and Photos has been updated accordingly. I have HEVC Video Extensions installed on my Windows, so I can still see the HEIC/HEVC files from Photos normally.

For Video Station, Synology recommends using a third party package (lmao). If you are using Video Station, I suggest you move to another solution before updating.

Looks ugly per the comment over on Reddit.

They dropped support for HEVC and HEIC. What the heck.

I would assume that is for their player only.  Anything which is passed through would still be handled by the client like it says.

Maybe affects transcoding if anything?

That is what I was thinking as some else's comment it did not affect third party software.  With their kb mentioning Emby, Jellyfin, Plex.

Another comment makes it sounds like HEVC, etc have just been moved to an addon and you can still get them.

I'll wait a bit for kaj and try it myself.

Someone has to be the first victim.  But yes that may become an issue if that functionality has been affected per using it as a server.

Ok, update completed, all ok. Emby running and I can play my content.

One thing to remember, if you've done the SSD volume hack, my NAS beeped continuously from start-up and informed me the drives on Volume 2 were incompatible and wouldn't let me access Volume 2. I had the database compatibility HDD/SDD script set to run at start up, but it still didn't recognise them. I downloaded the updated script from here, added that as a start-up task, rebooted and Volume 2 is now recognised and all working perfectly.

I think, as decoding it done on client devices now, it really doesn't affect anything.

EDIT: Should mention I'm running the beta Emby server

Okay, just start the update myself.  I'm on the latest beta also.

But from a transcoding standpoint does it still work?

The last time Synology made a big update which required a change on Emby's part the update mentioned the current Emby was incompatible.  I haven't seen any message saying it wasn't compatible.

Luckily for me the DS1821+ didn't require that hack to see them as volume drives.

Can you force a HW transcode to see if it still works?

Yes that was my thinking as I don't know how they are removing functionality local.

Starting from this version, the processing of media files using HEVC (H.265), AVC (H.264), and VC-1 codecs will be transitioned from the server to end devices to reduce unnecessary resource usage on the system and enhance system efficiency. These codecs are widespread on end devices such as smartphones, tablets, computers, and smart TVs. If the end device does not support the required codecs, the use of media files may be limited.

So if the NAS can not process these codecs it would cripple Emby I would think.

You can try dropping the max bitrate to something below what the video is.

Software or Hardware?

I don't have an Intel processor, so no hardware assisted transcoding using vaapi.  However, I'll try forcing a transcode when this is done.

This is taking a long time compared to other updates.

How do I know which one was used? I have VAAPI and QuickSync enabled as preferred Hardware Decoders

Been awhile since I transcoded anything, but does the transcode log not say?

Mine didn't take too long...about 5 or 6 minutes.

The ffmpeg log is the best way to check, but should be able to see most of the info in server log.

Just trying to get the most info as possible now.
