Can't FF or REW while watching recorded content

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hi - I noticed tonight that I'm completely unable to fast forward or rewind while watching content streamed from my Synology NAS to the Emby app on my LG TV. If I press either the FF or REW button the picture briefly stutters and then continues playing as normal.

It's certainly not a problem I've experinced before. Could it be something weird at my end? I've logged out and back in but there's no change. Could ot have been caused by the recent software update?

Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

Does it happen on every file or just that one? Also check stats for nerds and note the playback type, is it DirectPlay, Transcode, or DirectStream

I checked a couple of things and it's happening on all of them.

Playback type is Direct Play (noted against Stream, Video and Audio)

Not really sure what could be causing this, and I haven’t seen anyone else report it yet, so it shouldn’t be related to the update.

Which FF/REW buttons are you using?  Is that the on screen button?  My remote doesn’t have FF/REW

What happens when you just use the left right arrows on the remote. What about selecting the slider on the in screen display and moving it left/right.

I'm using a Harmony universal remote.

Ooh this might be me... I assumed you could FF or REW smoothly with a single click but you actually need to advance or rewind by repeatedly clicking for every 10 second advance (per skip settings)?

When I do that - FF, FF, FF, FF - etc. it works. Is that therefore functioning correctly?

Yes, that sounds correct. Do you still have the original remote? If you do, hold down a left or right arrow key and see what that does. That would be the equivalent of holding down rew/ff. It may not do anything useful, but if it does you can see whether you can reproduce holding down the key with the harmony to get the same effect.

I've tested the FF/REW and left/right keys on the original remote and compared them to the corresponding functions on the Harmony. They all behave the same way, i.e. they skip forward or back according to the "Skip forward length" and "Skip back length" values chosen in Emby settings.

So, yeah, there doesn't appear to be a smooth way to FF or REW, only to advance or reverse in, for example, 30 second steps.

I have pretty much the same problem as OP.  In my case, when holding down the left or right arrow on the remote (original LG TV remote) the video does not rewind or fast forward, but when the button is released it skips back/forward one increment (10 s).

I would be very surprised if it wasn't related to the update. You used to be able to hold the left/right button to get it to, y'know, rewind/fast forward multiple steps, until the button was released. The change happened around the same time as the latest update was installed on my TV. Please fix this regression bug!

Wow, I'm so glad you said that!  For a while I thought I was going mad, imagining functionality that wasn't there!

Yeah, it seems like something in the recent update for LG TVs messed this up.

Please can you arrange a fix?

What model TV?  Holding it down should still work, but some models are quirky and might not be behaving as expected.

I have an LG OLED55C7V

Some models may be quirky, but mine certainly had smoother FF/REW functionality prior to the recent update.

Holding the button down no longer works.

To put this into context, to FF through a 120 minute film I now have to press FF 240 times!

Did you try just using left and right arrow keys? You can just hold down right and then let go and it will keep fast forwarding until you press play/pause to stop it.

Yes I've tried that, it no longer works.

What exactly did you do?

Two things: I long-pressed FF. And I long-pressed the RIGHT direction button. Both actions move the progress bar forwards 30 seconds only. To move it forwards again I have to press FF or RIGHT again. The same thing happens in the reverse direction.

Last week (prior to the update) it worked the way you described.

Has anyone been able to check and identify the cause of this?

Yes, it appears to only be affecting older models.  Just trying to find the best way to resolve it

Excellent, thank you!

Excellent 🙂 I noticed an Emby update went out for my TV earlier this week but it hasn't made any difference (just in case it was supposed to...)

Hi, yes sorry this didn't make it in before we submitted but we'll make sure this fix is included in the next Emby LG app update. Thanks.

Hi Luke - a new update installed on my LG TV yesterday but the FF/REW function still isn't working properly. You can still only jump forward and back at pre-set intervals.

Did you try holding down the left/right button?
