jglazer63 22 Posted August 22, 2024 Posted August 22, 2024 Has anyone figured out a way to get around the limitations of android auto to be able to watch a video on your car display? I am sitting in parking lots a lot and it would be great to be able to watch something there. Yea, I understand the safety concerns but am willing to trust myself. I do have the motorola wireless android auto dongle which works great but I only get sound with emby. Thanks!
visproduction 315 Posted August 22, 2024 Posted August 22, 2024 (edited) 1 ) Getting Emby Android to work sounds like the best choice. Maybe someone else knows how to do that. 2 ) Alternatively, loading Kodi, turning it on and making sure you have a Wifi and Internet working in the car. Then see if Emby Web on Mobile can cast to Kodi via Wifi. https://kodibeginner.com/use-kodi-android-in-car-entertainment/#google_vignette (this page gets legitimate pop-up iframe ads.) 3 ) HDMI or USB input 3rd party boxes and then just bring videos along on a USB drive to play. Not as nice as Emby, but playback is local, so driving through a tunnel would have no effect on playback. Example products: https://www.carplaylife.com/video/hdmi-in-out-carplay-ai-box-ottocast-picasou-2-pro-carplay-adapter-r 4) Setting up a server in the vehicle that can run Emby, although possible, not an easy choice. You would probably not be able to have anything fast enough to transcode, so all your content would need to be able to direct play correctly on your playback, which may mean all content pre converted to h.264 and AAC or MP3 audio with no more than around 3000 kbit/sec video codec. Most people do not have this media ready. 3rd party windows server: https://www.amazon.com/stores/MeLE/page/F9B0BAB1-9CD4-4E43-8204-419A73E5888D?ref_=ast_bln&store_ref=bl_ast_dp_brandLogo_sto 5) Have Emby installed and running on a notebook computer instead and use that to playback content. It may be able to cast to the Android Auto, but why bother, a notebook is portable. Put it wherever you like. Hope that helps. Edited August 22, 2024 by visproduction
ebr 16169 Posted August 22, 2024 Posted August 22, 2024 Hi. The legal liability involved probably means this will never be possible with Android Auto.

Solutions for youtube and other video systems. Just curious if I can do it with emby. Right now I have to use my cell phone leaning against the larger car screen. I am sure that avoids the driving-while-watching issue.
Luke 42077 Posted August 22, 2024 Posted August 22, 2024 From the context of Android auto there is no way, other than potentially being able to play videos is an audio only mode.

As I said, the legal liability on the part of the software providers (both us and Google) is just too high. Unfortunately, there is no personal responsibility anymore. When someone does something stupid and gets hurt, someone else is made to pay. 1
