Derek_C 0 Posted August 21, 2024 Posted August 21, 2024 I'm using Handbrake to convert some files and am trying to preserve the subtitles. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get the names I provide to show up in Emby. For example, for "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", ffprobe shows me this: Stream #0:4[0x5](eng): Subtitle: dvd_subtitle (dvdsub) (mp4s / 0x7334706D), 720x480, 5 kb/s (default) Metadata: creation_time : 2024-08-12T22:23:07.000000Z handler_name : English Stream #0:5[0x6](eng): Subtitle: dvd_subtitle (dvdsub) (mp4s / 0x7334706D), 720x480, 9 kb/s Metadata: creation_time : 2024-08-12T22:23:07.000000Z handler_name : Screenplay: Read as you watch! Stream #0:6[0x7](eng): Subtitle: dvd_subtitle (dvdsub) (mp4s / 0x7334706D), 720x480, 5 kb/s Metadata: creation_time : 2024-08-12T22:23:07.000000Z handler_name : For people who do not lke the film (taken from “Henry IV Part II” by William Shakespeare Stream #0:7[0xa](eng): Subtitle: mov_text (tx3g / 0x67337874), 798x72, 0 kb/s Metadata: creation_time : 2024-08-12T22:23:07.000000Z handler_name : Closed Captions What I see is this: I was expecting to see instead English Screenplay: Read as you watch! For people who do not lke the film (taken from “Henry IV Part II” by William Shakespeare Closed Captions I realize that the problem might lie in the way I've used Handbrake – perhaps Emby doesn't understand the "handler_name" tag (although VLC and other apps seem to. handle it correctly). Or maybe there's something else I'm missing as I'm very new to Emby. Thanks for any pointers.
Happy2Play 9780 Posted August 21, 2024 Posted August 21, 2024 (edited) Does it show in Media Info? 1 hour ago, Derek_C said: Emby doesn't understand the "handler_name" tag Don't think this have ever come up before. But dev would have to confirm if it is mapped to track title/name. Edited August 21, 2024 by Happy2Play
Luke 42077 Posted August 22, 2024 Posted August 22, 2024 I've never heard of handler_name. Emby does not use that. What software populates that?
Derek_C 0 Posted August 22, 2024 Author Posted August 22, 2024 This is weird to me, too. I'm using Handbrake, which usually handles things correctly, but I don't know enough about this to know whether that's true in this case. I do know that VLC displays the "handler_name" correctly, so it must be part of some spec somewhere:

Happy2Play 9780 Posted August 22, 2024 Posted August 22, 2024 I tested it myself but Emby has never looked at that field. Only Title/Name I believe. There are so many different programs that write to different field so if anything it would be a feature request but don't know how common that field is used. As I believe you are the first to bring it up.
