bladerunner1948 0 Posted August 17, 2024 Posted August 17, 2024 Running Monterey 12.7.5 Emby 4.8.8.0 Firefox and Safari latest versions. Am in France. The subtitles are DVBSUB With TV recordings, subtitles always appear superimposed on the content. This is on left side and about the middle of the screen as shown in the attached. This happens on the TV (LG) when watching recordings and also in the browsers. The same content played using VLC has the subtitles at the bottom of the screen which is what I want. Searching through the forums I have found that others have the same issue but not perhaps the same hardware/OS so I haven't been able to find a solution. In some cases a new version of the Emby software cured the problem. I'm running the latest AFAIK. These two screenshots show what I mean. Any ideas/suggestions?
Luke 42077 Posted August 18, 2024 Posted August 18, 2024 Hi there, let's look at an example. Please attach the information requested in how to report a media playback issue. Thanks!
bladerunner1948 0 Posted August 18, 2024 Author Posted August 18, 2024 Hi, Thanks for the quick response. I'm not sure I can add any more info. The first screenshot that I attached shows the problem. The subtitles are on the middle left rather than at the bottom. The second screenshot was the same recording using VLC for playback. The browser I am using is Firefox. There were no errors reported. The only problem is the positioning of the subtitles. I have attached a copy of the log file that covers the period where I paused playback to take the above screenshot. In the post above, I have provided the OS and Emby server version details. If there is any other information I can provide please let me know. visproduction 315 Posted August 18, 2024 Posted August 18, 2024 (edited) Has the media been upconverted to 1920px width? I noticed in the log, that the Subtitle codec is dvdsub which, I believe is also known as microdvd.sub. Since DVD playback size is 720 x 540, perhaps the subtitle is set to show up in the correct pixel position for a DVD video. If the screen were cropped back from blu-ray to DVD resolution, the area would look like this. The subtitles would show up more in a correct position. Perhaps upconversion failed to also readjust the subtitle position in the DVDsub codec. Edited August 18, 2024 by visproduction
bladerunner1948 0 Posted August 18, 2024 Author Posted August 18, 2024 Hi, The subtitles are actually SDH DVBSUB not dvdsub. The recording was a TV recording via antenna and Homerun so no conversions as far as I know. Typically the subtitles are SDH DVBSUB or just DVBSUB. The channel being recorded was ARTE. It always shows movies in original voice plus French subtitles.

Is a solution likely? I have a pile of recordings now all of which are pretty much unwatchable. The positioning is a major problem as is the size of the text. I have tried changing some of the settings in appearance and position settings in the Subtitle section of the configuration screen but nothing I do has any effect. I'm ready to try anything you might suggest. Regards, Mark

bladerunner1948 0 Posted November 13, 2024 Author Posted November 13, 2024 Hi, I've been really patient but It's about three months since I logged this problem and the progress to date is nil. Looks like you have no solution or aren't really bothered. That is a pity because otherwise it's a great product but spoiled by this subtitle positioning problem. If you are human, please don't send another "We're looking into it" message. If you're a bot, knock yourself out. Regards, Mark
HjanecksD03 2 Posted December 19, 2025 Posted December 19, 2025 I was looking for this too! Just a heads up that on most of the TV apps, you have to actually be inside the video player to change this. If you bring up the on-screen menu while playing a movie and hit the 'CC/Subtitles' icon, there’s usually a 'Settings' or 'Offset' option there. It’s not a global setting in the main dashboard, which is why it’s so hard to find! 1
