Thanks for Emby.  It is an amazing platform that I am so glad that I've found.

I have a suggestion to simplify authentication of remote clients.  The use case is a family with a mix of devices in a range of areas.  Users range in age from very young to very old, so everything needs to be simple to use.

At the moment, I can create users on my server but I first need to log in to each device to authorise it.  That'd be fine if it were just browser access, but trying to use Android's keyboard with a TV remote to enter a 32 character password is not an experience anyone would enjoy.  That's ignoring the fact that not all devices are in my house.  My suggestion is as follows:

  • Remote device is started and opens the Emby app.
  • User enters the URL of the server.
  • The server and device handshake, and the user is presented with a simple, multi-digit code (eg Z-X-4-9-A).  The code is obviously single use.
  • The user then tells me the code, which I can enter into Emby (a web page, the user account dialog, whatever) using my server administrator credentials.
  • Device is authenticated and can work with user switching as usual

The benefit here is a vast simplification of adding devices intended to be shared, whilst not needing to reduce the security of my admin account.

Hi.  We have plans for simplifying this process via a QR code system but, in your example, a user was never chosen...

Also, for remote devices, you can use Emby Connect.
