hello there,

hope you all having a good day.

as the title say it all,

can someone explain to me why my Synology CPU usage very high ( DS923+ ) that's only while using emby from only 2 users !!! ...and also when the emby is doing some Tasks .

i will upload some pics for the reference .

i also want to ask about those two lines the green i know what is it, but i wanna know the red line, correct me if am wrong its the transcoding line ?

if there is anything i can do to reduce the CPU usage ?!

thank you .

Hi @Sankawso you had two simultaneous video transcodes going? Normally this will cause high cpu usage.

If you can attach the emby server log then we might be able to offer advice on how to reduce the resource consumption of the server:

Thanks.

Since media transcoding is happening this would be normal.  Yes the red line is amount transcoded.  So one has finish transcoding entire media while the other is still transcoding.

If you enable "Throttling" on the Transcode page it may help a little as it only transcode enough to stay ahead of playback vs the entire file all at once.

Hello @Happy2Playthanks for the reply and explaining.

am cool with the CPU doin it thing but 98% for like 2hours its seems off a bit 😅, and for the throttling i might enable it but i will wait for luke to check the logs first maybe i didn't set the emby setting good, i don't know!

i have around lets say 10 active users friends and family, imagine if half of them using the server at the same time watching a movie that require a transcoding, i wonder what the percentage will be 😅 if 98% with only 2 users .

i also added new 4gb of ram from synology recently, and waiting for the synology NVMe 400gb x2 to be arrive so i can install them. please tell me this will help the CPU 😅

i had a thread about upgrading my synology and ended up with if i move some emby files to NVMe volume, will help to transcode faster and use the other one as cache it will be better for emby performance .

thank you again i really appreciate it, and sorry if my knowledge limited still learning

Well some of it the nature of ffmpeg as it will utilize as much as the cpu as possible to get the job done this is where throttling can help.  You see this in general processing media yourself.  Only way around it is to have media that direct plays in all client or hardware that will utilize Hardware Acceleration.

I could be wrong but don't believe the AMD Ryzen R1600 is capable.

Your best bet is probably to focus on avoiding transcoding rather than making it faster. That means optimizing your media so  that it direct plays as much as possible.

@Happy2Play

hello guys, thanks for the replies and sorry for the late reply, i was on a vacation and i just came back.

so how to have a direct play ? What kind of media should i use ?

I also got my synology m.2 400gb x2 am planning to use them as one for caching and the other one for storage .

Is this setup enough for emby, or preferable to add 2x for caching or 2x for storage ?

one more thing if i use one as storage can i ahift emby app in it? If yes should i remove it and reinstall it again ? Or !?

thanks again 🙏

It all depend on how much transcoding is needed as almost any system can be a server.  But if transcoding is needed it needs to be powerful enough for it and from a software only standpoint a NAS will not have the cpu power to do multiple streams if even one.

Both your examples above are converting hevc to h264.  One for bitrate limit and the other would appear to be unsupported codec.

There are really too many variables to list but for this system you would need media that can direct play to client/apps.

What devices do you play with the most? If it’s a variety, then mp4 videos are your best bet to avoid transcoding.
