user84 46 Posted August 12, 2024 Posted August 12, 2024 The setting to not automatically play the next episode in a show does not apply when playing a playlist on shuffle. I'm not sure why this setting does not apply in that situation. Is there another setting I need to enable in order to not have playlists play in perpetuity?
Luke 42079 Posted August 12, 2024 Posted August 12, 2024 Hi, right that setting is only used for individual episode playback.

I apologize for my lack of clarity. Five "nots." Sheesh. Sorry about that. When navigating to the playlist menu, choosing a playlist, and shuffling that playlist, next episodes will play over and over without stopping. I am curious whether there is a setting that will stop this from happening, or at least give me the option to select the next item in the playlist if I choose to?

I have a playlist of hundreds of episodes from several different comedy TV shows I enjoy watching. I open up the playlist and click the shuffle button to choose any episode from these TV shows, since I've already watched all of them through and it doesn't matter what episode I watch. Once the first episode plays and completes, it then automatically plays another episode from one of the shows in my playlist. It will continue doing this, episode after episode, until I stop it. This is the behavior I'm trying to put a stop to.

That button specifically is to "shuffle play" the entire playlist and that is what the program is doing. Playlists are, by definition, collections of items to play in sequence so any action you take to play an item from a playlist is going to play the items after it because that's the intended function of a playlist. Perhaps you want to create a collection of these items instead? That would not imply a list to play together necessarily.

This is actually a smart playlist I created that pulls unplayed items from a static playlist. I then shuffle the smart playlist. I do this because if I were to shuffle the static playlist, it would repeat episodes too regularly. I suspect if I pull from a collection instead, the outcome will be the same. Maybe what I am asking for is a feature request? I can't see the harm in giving a user the option to ask for confirmation to play the next item in a playlist.

user84 46 Posted August 13, 2024 Author Posted August 13, 2024 Just now, ebr said: That would just be very unexpected by most people. By definition a playlist is a list of items to play... As a user, I prefer to be given choices, rather than the developer making those choices for me. Not much different than the choice you provide when I skip intros on TV episodes. I would imagine some users would find that option unexpected since they enjoy the theme songs of TV shows. No two users are the same, which is why I appreciate the choice. I would also say that by definition, TV episodes are a type of playlist as well. They are meant to be played in order, one after another. And yet, we are given the option to choose to play the next item in that "playlist" or not, depending on our setup. I've said my piece. If you feel the option would be taken seriously by the Dev team, I am happy to formally make this request. If not, I will let it lie.
Luke 42079 Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 Some sort of control is certainly possible but I don't think using the same setting would make sense. That would result in users playing playlists who are not able to automatically advance when they are currently accustomed to doing that.
