Android TV 2.1.14 framerate problems

I have just noticed that ATV 2.1.14 has problems with the playback of material with 25 frame rates. It is jerky. Although my refresh app shows me that it has switched to 25.

I have to compare it with another file that also has 25 frames. I pulled those episodes again at 23,976, but there were still stutters. Much less, but it was smoother. It may also be due to the series itself. That it wasn't ripped cleanly. But I have to find an episode first.

I have found a movie with a frame rate of 25. I selected the end credits, as you can see it most clearly there.

Abspann Bitrate 25.mkv

It runs absolutely smoothly in Kodi. There correct refresh rate is selected.

Did you send the log from the app?

Can you please provide the other requested information so I can find it?

Then add the following information to your report in the forum:

  • Exactly what you were doing and what happened.  Include the name of whatever you played if it is a playback problem
  • The time you sent the log (in Eastern Time please - UTC -5)
  • The name of the Emby user on the local server that was logged in at the time

Why can't you just check it with the file I uploaded here? Constantly making a huge act out of the whole thing when it could be so easy! Should I send another picture of the socks I was wearing?

I cannot find a Roku log anywhere near the time of your post.  What is the name of your server?

I can try but we have completely different environments.

How did you come up with Roku? I never mentioned that I had a Roku player. Just take a look at my signature to see what kind of player I have.

Server is called i5Prodesk

For the life of me, I don't understand why I have to describe the problem a hundred times. Just scroll up and read it.

Apologies, switching context too fast I guess.

Your sample plays buttery smooth on my Android TV with the Android TV app.  But I have a different display device than you do.

I never received this log.  Did you get a confirmation message that the log sent?

Did you notice that the video has a DTS-HD soundtrack and are you aware that this entails completely different requirements? Have you tested it on a TV with an AV receiver?

I would have been surprised too......

If you are using an Android device connected directly to your receiver that is then outputting the video, then that would be another point of possible issues with frame rates.

My test direct plays and plays smoothly but it is with different equipment than you have - which is why I'd like to see an app log if possible.

In other words - you can't have an amplifier in between to use the Android TV app? You can't have HD sound with Emby apps? So something is going wrong somewhere - and it's huge.

What can I do other than program the debug mode in the app? And then I'm supposed to calculate the time zone myself? What kind of cheese is that now?????

No, I didn't say that at all.  I simply said, in this one instance, your receiver could be a contributor to the issue you are seeing.

Can you please try reproducing the issue and sending another log?  It actually may not show anything but its worth a look.

However, I also had these problems with the predecessor - an Onkyo. It is unlikely that the successor, a Denon, is now also causing the problems. Then why are there no playback problems with Kodi????

I will send another error log tomorrow. But let me know first before you find nothing in the masses again.

I just tested your sample on my projector setup - which is a Shield Pro through an Onkyo receiver.  Smooth playback there but that system automatically matches frame rate (actually, went to 50hz).  If I manually force a bad frame rate, I can create a slight judder every second or so but that would be expected.

What frame rate is your display set to?

Under Kodi and via Emby I see 25. And it runs smoothly under Kodi.

I've just looked again for an old series with a frame rate of 25 and found it. But I only have Dolby 2.0 - I don't think that's where the error occurs. But test it.

So I started playing Manifest S02E13 at 14:52 on my Shield, and finished at 15:01 - server "I5PRODESK" - Western European time

This is what I noticed. The display mode does not match the refresh rate. However, the frame rate of the Shield still shows me 25. So something is wrong somewhere.

Here is an excerpt from that episode.
Sample.mkv
You can see it very clearly when the plane flies over the runway during the short intro. It's very jerky there.

Furthermore - can you finally correct this?

This should read "Debugeinstellungen aktivieren" and not "Debugeinstellungen aAktivieren"

And actually, this does not belong in the Screen settings section, but in General playback

Have you turned on the option to switch rates automatically?  Does your system support that?

I can definitely see why a 25Hz video would be jerky played back at 23.98.

Yes - and the additional option "Prefer exact refresh rate".

The Refresh Rate tool is only used to adjust the actual refresh rate. But no adjustment of the refresh rate itself. In my opinion, this should always be done by the app itself.

The Shield standard settings are also set to 59.40 HZ. If I were to set this to 23.976, certain other apps would not work.

But I wouldn't know where to deactivate the video processor on the Denon either. It was easier with the Onkyo, where you pressed two buttons in the device itself at the same time, and the video processor was deactivated, and the picture was looped through without further processing.

But in general it has to work. With Kodi it also runs cleanly, without stuttering, with the correct refresh rate. And there I can still specify in the system settings what resolutions and refresh rates it can or may use, so if it runs smoothly with Kodi, then it can't be due to my entire device setup.

During playback, if you bring up the menu for display mode, which one is selected?  Can you choose either 50 or 25 and it smooths out?

Can't check now. First Lady blocks TV.

So I can do what I want, the stuttering doesn't go away - whether 25 or 50 or 59.94 or 60 - the stuttering remains. Sometimes it even plays a few microseconds faster than it should.

Please don't tell me it's because of the file, it's because of my hardware, the same stuff runs smoothly on Kodi on the same Shield. And I don't change anything extra on the amplifier or TV.
