Emby library loading but video not playing on 2nd HDD

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hi, first off I'm really dumb and new at this so there could be some kind of dumb obvious reason here, but I've tried troubleshooting through Emby resources and old forum posts that fit the criteria of 'library loading but video not playing' or 'hdd issues'. I haven't read anything that explicitly states something in my setup shouldn't work so asking here.

I sent the logs from my Roku device at about 8:18 ET and was trying to play '90 Day Fiance The Other Way' (lol) and 'This Old House.' User is Media. Logs are selecting episode, it loads for a while, goes back to episode page. As well as it loading to 33%, getting an error, then returning to episode page.

I have a 20TB HDD I installed into a dell 7010 optiplex - 3.2 ghz, 8g ram. Best idea? Questionable. I set up my library on it and when accessing it through the Emby App on my Roku TV,  the libraries + metadata on the drive load (very slowly 😔) but video will not play. It is just the initial loading circle for a few minutes until it goes back to an episode page.

Other details:

  • This morning I got an error message for the first time that I wasn't able to capture. Something about not being able to read the format. This was after turning on debugging to send logs, and I was able to load a video to 33% but then the same behavior.
  • I successfully run Emby from an old laptop on the same home network. I have also used it successfully from this optiplex, but with the library on its original hard drive.
  • I added back a library on the original hard drive to test if that worked, but it has the same behavior as the 20TB now
  • The 20 TB drive seems healthy per chkdsk, but I'm not sure if that means anything.
  • I can play video through Emby on the computer itself. It is an ethernet connection

Some things I have tried:

• Making sure all of the sharing options I can figure out for the drive are on. I've given permissions to everything I can and 'Everyone' should at least have read access
  • Re-organizing and re-scanning the libraries. the structure is F:\Media\TV Movies Music\TV and F:\Media\TV Movies Music\Movies
  • Re-labeling the drive in lieu of re-rescanning

I know it'll be something silly but I've run out of troubleshooting at my skill level. Thank you to anyone who can help!

My first thought is to check your database cache size (in the Database section of the Dashboard):

A recommendation for how to choose the cache size is given in this article:

Looks like a path issue @Lukeis it the special characters?

F:\Media\TV Movies Music\TVTV\90 Day Fiancé - The Other Way\Season 6\90 Day Fiancé - The Other Way - S06E03 - Can Buy Me Love HDTV-1080p.mkv

The above is what Emby is showing as the path.

F:\Media\TV Movies Music\TV
F:\Media\TV Movies Music\Movies

These are what you mentioned are the paths.

What is TVTV? Are you positive your library folders are set correctly?

Thank you both for the help and looking at the logs! I have been leaning towards it being a path issue. I might have messed something up in trying to transfer the metadata etc. to its new location.

@speechles, that is a lazy typo on my part. TVTV is currently the TV file, as I was trying to shuffle everything around within the Media folder to see if that helped.

I was leaning towards it being something involving paths after I tried to put everything Emby on the F drive, including the app, but I saw when looking at the Server Paths for the cache size article that my programdata, cache, etc. is still located on the C drive. I uninstalled Emby and tried to reinstall everything on F, but maybe I messed that up. Shouldn't it be OK if the server is on a different drive though, if my libraries are pointing at the correct location?

I did try to move the metadata pathway to F, but I guess that didn't work?

I did however do the whole switching-up drives thing because I was getting the same problem beforehand, so hm.

Have you ran the scheduled task "Scan library" since transfer everything?

I believe I scanned when I switched everything about a week ago and it looks like it scanned itself 2 hours ago. I did change the metadata back to where I had put it before on the F drive (moved and scanned metadata), mostly just as a means of poking at it and testing again. Still same results.

Hello, to update on this: I fully uninstalled and reinstalled the Emby server to see if that would help, and alas. Same problem. Would anyone be able to take a look at these logs to see if there is anything standing out?

I tried accessing with VPN on, with VPN having a tunnel for the Emby server (not sure if I did it correctly or if that's a thing but idk I selected the emby server), and then with the VPN off. I know I tried turning it off/on as one of the first troubleshooting steps on my first go-around. Previously when a VPN has been a problem I haven't been able to connect at all, but again I'm able to get into the library and everything loads until trying to play.

And as mentioned, I have been able to play from this computer before. This was before I added the HDD and the only other thing is that is different is I'm now using an old router in bridge mode between it and the modem. I don't know if that's relevant or not.

Again, thank you to anyone taking the time to help me figure this out! I'm still expecting it to be some dumb obvious issue.

It still sounds like a file access permissions issue.  Perhaps you skipped some step.  Check out: https://www.thewindowsclub.com/change-files-and-folders-permissions-in-windows-10

HI, I see nothing obvious here. For testing purposes, to rule out a problem with the drive, can you copy the video to a folder on the main drive and add this folder as a library in Emby. Is that able to play normally?

Posted

Hello @visproductionthat is very possible, thank you for the guide! This is the first time I've added a HDD so I expect I did something wrong, hah. Although the fact it's not working on either the main drive or 2nd is confusing. I've checked the box recommended in the security/sharing settings so permissions run down into child folders. When I select a piece of media in Windows explorer, it says Shared. Is that the correct way for it to be?

@Luke, thank you again! I copied a folder to the original drive and made a library for it with the same results when trying to play on Roku tv.

Some other updates of note:

- I swapped out ethernet cables and this might have helped? I also re-did permissions and checked the box for them to extend into child folders. After this, what had been sporadic playback on an android phone is now playing smoothly from all library locations!

- Roku TV still will not play video from either drive. Stuck on the thicker-dashed-lines loading circle

- On the Roku TV an audiobook from the original drive plays, eventually, but only in short blips

tldr: everything works now on phone. Video still not working on Roku TV from either drive and audiobook on original drive plays in short 1/2 second blips

Thank you again to all that have helped! I am attaching logs of the video not playing again on the Roku TV, video playing successfully on phone, and audiobook playing in blips on roku tv (I think).

Hi visproduction, thank you for the video! I followed it and ended up changing the owner from SYSTEM to the user profile, in this case 'Media,' with no improved results. I'm now more skeptical that this particular path is the trail to follow because

  • I see in the video that the user was originally not able to see the "fullness" of the drive when viewing their computer, which I was able to before following the video's instructions (idk if relevant but gave me some pause)
  • Video has been acting the same (not playing) from both the 2nd HDD and the original drive
  • Now video will not play on either phone app or Roku TV, when it was previously working on the phone 😅 Not sure if related or the luck of the draw today
    • an update to this one as I'm finishing up the post: getting the same blip of audio like 10 minutes later and after leaving the app on phone

This is a screenshot of my permissions list, with the highlighted Guests having the least amount of permissions and all others having all Allow boxes checked.

I do get a content not available error every once in a while which would imply not being able to access the files, but it's still confusing as it's able to pull the files and metadata, just not video. Attaching today's round of log generation and one from when I actually got the content not available error.

It's also frustrating because I'm running Emby perfectly well on my other home server via an old laptop 🤷‍♂️

Thank you again to all helping!

Codec and resolution not supported seems to be the first suspect in 'content not available.txt'

Why are there multiple resolutions listed in this file as error logs?  Are the original medias multi resolution streaming content?  That alone, might explain everything.

See lines 236 - 360 ( about 30 error codes on codec and multiple resolutions.)

Other possible issue:

This '21 post discussed if "ReadWritePaths=-/dev/dri" had a typo '-' that caused this issue.  It does not appear to be resolved in this post.  Is there still a '-'?  What file is this and has someone tested to see if removing the '-' would help?  It looks like this issue is hard to replicate.  Maybe bordor's server is a good setup to try removing the '-'.

Further down this text log shows:

line 378
"Cannot load nvcuda.dll"

Is this a missing or corrupt / out of date file?

Thank you for taking a look at them, visproduction! I'm not sure what a lot of those words mean, but I thought I'd try a lower quality media file that I have recently played successfully on my other setup to see what happens. This time there wasn't an error, but 6+ minutes of loading until the screen said 33%, then a couple second blip of media, then 37% for a while, then another blip, then 42% and I gave up after that. All in all maybe 15-20 minutes. Looking at it, there are a lot of port forwarding errors going on. I see some answers to this vary from not a big deal, to try downloading a thing, to VPN left on--is this just another standalone issue?

I believe this log should show the scenario described, and then I turned my VPN off (always forget about that) and try again but like before it doesn't seem to change the outcome. Use the same VPN on my other server, too, and have it running when streaming on my LAN.

Thanks again for your time!

So is the problem only on Roku at this point?

The problem is on both the Roku TV and the Android app--I don't have much else to test it on besides those two. Both work with my other server. To narrow the scope little, I've started just using that old server to access and play the media on the 2nd HDD, which works perfectly well. So permissions and hard drive integrity seem to be eliminated.

Is it a problem if both servers are using the same port 8086? I didn't think of this before because, as mentioned, it was working previously with the same configuration being on the same port as the other server. The only changes I can think of between working and non-working have been adding the 2nd HDD and adding a router in bridge mode rather than connecting directly to the modem. When not in bridge mode that router should have the same settings as when I used it for a router and played Emby successfully. I've been meaning to reset it, actually.

Emby and the media load very slowly on the server, as well. Attaching logs from a couple of media pieces. The second one attempted is lower quality and manages to get to 33% eventually. I exited before it happened, but usually this means it'll play for two seconds, load for 5 minutes, play two seconds, etc.

Thank you for all of your help!!

Different machines you are fine same machine they need to be different ports.  But were both servers built independently or cloned?

They were built independently I believe? Setup of one didn't involve anything from the other.

@Luke  It's working!! This is so exciting. When I opened Emby I saw there was an update--does that have anything to do with it? I haven't troubleshot in a few weeks because my other setup was an OK interim fix.

@bordorHi,

Probably not, but it's a good idea to update to the latest version when you get a chance.
