Depends on your viewpoint. Someone else might say just basic 101 to have them alphabetical or in original track order and nobody would be equivocally right or wrong.

The one you actually download (there's then per definition a very high probability you want to use ..)

1. Not per default and additionally

2. on the bottom

is def not user friendly . In no world

I would think Language grouping would be best as your preferred language is always first, internal/extremal to a point is irrelevant.

The most likely to be used should be at the top, then alphabetical to make it easy to find for those who may want a translation to a different language. If my default user language was Polish and a media item has ten or more subtitle languages why should I have to scroll down to P to find my subtitle?

I'm more with @supermoodon this one, in that external subs should be listed first - it is highly likely that you downloaded subs in the language you desire, so preferred language is practically irrelevant (edit: my external subs come in four languages (English/Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian), it'd be handy to have those listed on top, irrespective of the preferred language embedded one getting between them).

With all things being equal, you shouldn't have to scroll - it should already be pre-selected.

I don't see that in browser, Android Mobile or Android TV. Nothing is pre-selected, highlighted or at the top of the list unless you mean when the playback subtitle settings are set to load them.

I think the order in the list is ambiguous and should be largely irrelevant in most cases for two reasons:

1) if you download a sub during playback, it will be automatically selected at that time and

2) If your subs are tagged properly, your desired one should also be selected automatically for you.

I would think needing to bring the menu up at all should be an exception...

Sorry, not following, if your preferred sub language was Polish, why wouldn't you have them set-up to be selected automatically but instead had to scroll in dropdown?

Just wanted to input here.

then  I use Tdarr remove subtitled from my media.

SRT / text subs are more usable a cross clients.

Tdarr is an absolute god send it however has a steep learning curve.
I would recommend Unmanic for people who wants an easier time.

Maybe because I or other users wouldn't want to have them turned on all of the time? Sometimes the audio is fine then someone walks in (the room at home or the show on TV) and can't understand what is said.

It works fine when force enabled or when downloading a new one as @ebr posted. Sometimes (or most of the time) when you want to enable after playback is started it takes more navigation than it should for ease-of-use.

For this use case yes, it is a mess scrolling through 20+ internal to get to those few external.  So yes I can see this needing reevaluated.

For auto selections it should work for the majority as is.

Easiest solution to me would be group by language not internal/external.

??

I'm bringing up the menu constantly! As written every 20min for my current show. because emby needs default in the name or whatever kind of specific requirement. As written too, all my other players are just playing the external sub as it should be

And as written too. Leaving the player to change the size or position (there 16:9 and full screen title in this world!) is also very unfriendly.

I recommend to check the sub management in a zidoo player to get some input. These devices are also not perfect in many ways but the subtitle management and display is light-years ahead of emby. Fonts size line spacing position sync colours and and and ... It's basically perfect and the opposite to my beloved emby

As I mentioned, proper identification of the subs is required for the best performance.  I understand that, for you specifically, this isn't an exception but, for the collection of users in general, it should be very rare to ever have to manually select subs.

Another solution is to remove or just not include when ripping all those internal subs you don't want.

I will give tdarr a try I guess. yes. thanks. or I will add another device even to tv directly when watching without avr to just get rid of the emby player for good. for the avr set im not using the emby player at all there was just no development over the years

I'm still not getting it. instead of grouping notifications or things I do not even understand when reading the changelog with blowing up basically everything in last year's, the emby team should imo probably focus on the core functionalities - and try to be the benchmark in these.

and that is to my understanding besides media management the various player for all the platforms to watch own content

as said, use a z9x pro a week for some movies with subs and then go back. it really hurts. it looks terrible and changing anything, if even possible, is so xxx

the presets aren't making sense for me. I need a real smart one.. and the sizes, and always going outside for everything there are only a few options most are missing anyway. the whole ui workflow to go to these settings and back is a joke.. leaving settings is not bringing you to the last video to resume. it brings you to the 4th of the top row. what logic is that? none! and I have so many more examples... :(

anyway just a video player.. 😉
