Sankaw 10 Posted July 31, 2024 Posted July 31, 2024 hello all, should i upgrade my Ram memory and add m2.nvme to have better performance ? and is it worth it ? am using my synology only for emby with 4x 4gb HDD( almost full now ) also my Ram 4gb. i have noticed that synology uses 98% of the CPU sometimes and its stays like that for couple of mins, also my ram usage right now 52% and i will be thankful if someone can explain to me if i should upgrade, what is the benefits of it . @FrostByte thank you.
FrostByte 5392 Posted August 1, 2024 Posted August 1, 2024 It can make a difference, but I'm not really sure you will notice a whole lot of difference unless you also move some Emby install files to the nvme volume. Take a look at Carlo's guide in the link below. It has instructions to create a volume on the nvme discs, but it also has instructions to move some of Emby. You and I don't need the stuff about forcing a volume on the nvme drives because DSM 7.2 can do that for us on our models. That part is only for other models. However, it also has the parts on moving some Emby folders for things such as metadata and transcoding. That's where you would probably notice a bigger difference depending on what you do. I never need transcoding, so that really makes no difference to me. If you want more details on any speed differences you should read through that thread. Carlo did a lot of testing and explaining what benefits he found. If you have the money, then just throw them in and see what you find first. Then tackle the other part about moving Emby to the new volume if you want.
Sankaw 10 Posted August 6, 2024 Author Posted August 6, 2024 Dear @FrostByte thank you for your reply i appreciate it, sorry it took me a while to reply you but i was on a vacation . i will go through the thread for sure. but what am dealing with here, am using the synology only for emby and only me who can access synology and with emby i have around 7-9 users, it was working fine ( still ) but when i started to download 4K movies around lets say ( 50gb+ ) users cant see the movie because of the (buffering or transcoding ) so am sure now it not the internet buffering cuz my server connected with 400mb download and 200mb upload fiber internet, and the user whos trying to watch got 5G around 600mb internet speed. unless am mistaken with this conclusion, and there is other factors causing this?
FrostByte 5392 Posted August 6, 2024 Posted August 6, 2024 Carlo does cover transcoding I believe and the benefits of m2 drives. However, you may want to post server/transcode logs for Luke to see if there's another reason it's transcoding if you don't think it's network speed. For instance, the Samsung app can buffer a lot just because it's transcoding PGS subs or HD audio even when my TV sits right next my server. That's why I always have srt subtitles and an alternate audio track in my movies so that I never have to transcode when using that app. My Shield has no issues with PGS subs and HD audio.
