FreeNAS plugin

RSVP,

Run the following:

service emby-server stop

pkg add https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Emby.Releases/releases/download/4.1.0.17/emby-server-freebsd_4.1.0.17_amd64.txz

(Substitute the numbers for the version you want)

service emby-server start

You should not update to a higher version at the moment, as the new base required for the emby plugin is freebsd 12 which is not implemented in freenas yet. Ergo please stick to the stable!

Yeah, it was an example of the commands. That’s why I put the “substitute version number here” in there.

Read about the versions and compatibility first.

Freenas just doesn't seem like the platform to host this.  I have an old box i haven't been using. I used to play around with different distros on to get an idea about the differences.  I think its time to use freenas for for file storage and get all my jails off. Its just been a time waster since 9.3 to be honest.  Just not sure yet where I am going to be moving too.  Or how to kill freenas off for good considering all the hardware in that box, and files etc.

emby is working better than ever from me on my FreeNAS box.

I managed to test out a good number of the 3.6.0.n betas and 4.0.2.0 I'm now running happily in a manually created jail.

Using the plugins on FreeNAS has always been problematic, and not just for emby.  Just don't use the plugins!

Manually creating jails is pretty solid, and you can keep things pretty much up to date either with a short delay through the ports or package installations or with a little more risk from the emby github.

Your lucky. My jails keep breaking. This last update did something about mounting.  So no matter what i try. The plugins, jail, docker. There is a constant issue and I cant keep them running. As all the bits and pieces update at different times. And i don't care enough about sticking with freenas to host to waste that much time. So I will use that time building a different box and learning something else.. Ubuntu?  with Docker?  Not sure.  The good things that came out of this has been learning about pfsense, emby and how awesome it is with kodi.   Weak link is freenas.

I guess we all have our own experiences with this stuff, but replacing a Netgear ReadyNAS with FreeNAS about 6-7 years ago was one of the best IT decisions I've ever made.  I now have 2 boxes running FreeNAS, with my main one running emby, various other jails and even some VMs without any issues.  The other is just a backup, but again the replication between the two is faultless.

FreeNAS and/or FreeBSD might not be the easiest thing to get to grips with, but when you have it's incredibly stable in my experience.

Currently the issue I have in an Iocage jail is when I add the storage to emby, I cant access the emby web gui any more.  I can access the  emby start up questions, if I don't add storage through freenas gui.  Any Ideas?  Love to be able to get out of the plugins and feel good about freenas again.

are you trying to move the config folder somewhere else or just adding media folder to the installation?

I followed post 993.   It doesnt mention anything about mounting. So i used the freenas gui.  That then makes it were i cant access the emby gui.

Just give my second method a try outlined here:

https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/13083-freenas-plugin/page-50&do=findComment&comment=723031

Then after it is installed, stop the newly created jail add storage with the GUI and restart the jail.

check also my very lengthy post here, for advanced setups, and change in UID for write access to folder etc.

Updated******

Just turned of pfblockerng and snort.  And tried again. seems to be progressing... but then a lot of stuff failing to install:

lang/mono

multimedia/libass

x11-fonts

print/freetype2

converters/fribidi

then some of them are:

security/gnutls

converters/iconv

audio/opus

etc...

Then does repository plugin default error:*******

refusing to fetch aritifacts and runpost install.sh!

Old*****

I wish this shell let me cut and paste.  it says secure package detected. gets to testing dnssec  response to plugin. then i get.  -pkg static : repository plugin default error:access repo file (xxxx) failed no such file and directory.  I can ping 8.8.8.8

Well not really sure how to help you here, DNS properly setup? you should not be getting an error message. I just tried it, here on my system and it installs fine.

Just to make sure, you are on the latest FreeNAS (u3)

You can try a third method, it's the script but manual, so you can figure out where it fails. if you like:

Create an empty jail (same as before)

#enter the jail shell
pkg install mono libass fontconfig freetype2 fribidi gnutls iconv opus samba48 sqlite3 libtheora libva libvorbis webp libx264 libzvbi libraw
pkg add -f https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Emby.Releases/releases/download/4.0.2.0/emby-server-freebsd_4.0.2.0_amd64.txz

sysrc -f /etc/rc.conf emby_server_enable="YES"
service emby-server start 2>/dev/null
restart jail

Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.None of this works. I am going to do a fresh install and switch to ssd for bootloader instead of my old usb sticks.    Been wanting to do that for ages. Will try again after that with the jails. If more hassles , I am not going to bother spending more time on freenas jails to get emby to be be a working version. Will stick with plugin and work on a new os.  My pfsense box rocks. not going to tinker with that thinking its the issue. its dialed in the way i want it for dns.

Just an FYI. You are aware that Plugin or Jails is the same thing. Plugins are just pre-created jails or jails with an install script, not more not less.

Yes I am aware of this.  Not sure what the problem was rebooted everything and went smooth.

it is only a time waster because the emby devs seem to want to make everything difficult for the user to update. it is so much better and easier to just send it to the plugin list on freenas and have people update it that way. Just like every other app is still doing. just don't know why emby devs don't get this through there heads a point and click is the way to go because not everybody can do what is required to update through shell etc..

it is freenas (ixsystems) choice to not update the plugin, i am not sure why you dont understand this! https://github.com/freenas/iocage-ix-plugins/issues/78 just read the tickets and see why. Dont understand why ixsystems just does not take the emby plugin away as they dont want to update it. The issue is that emby does not comply with gpl anymore.

Yes we do, there is a lot of mis-information there. They are just choosing not to update it.

not my turfwar to participate in. Missinformation or not, i just pointed out the reason for the lack of updates on freenas (ixsystems) side.

Yup, I understand. We can still build a freenas plugin and support it via manual install.

Lmao really? You're going to blame freenas? Smh so they update every single plugin but emby? And why exactly is that?

Posted

I'm not blaming anybody. I am just stating that they are choosing not to accept our updates because they do not like our transition to closed source. It is their system, they can choose to accept whoever they want just like all of the other app stores or catalogs.

We have invested significant resources into supporting their platform, so hopefully at some point they will take that into consideration.

Why not just update it manually? It's incredibly simple to do and the information is all over this board on how to do it.

I didn't even know the plugin directory still existed in FreeNAS. I gave up on that a few years back because it was very easy to see that almost every plugin in that list was outdated and very slow to update to the new version (not just Emby). And by the time the update got pushed through, that version would already be outdated.
