yocker 1248 Posted July 24, 2024 Posted July 24, 2024 (edited) My log seems to get spammed every time every time some one logs in and watched something. Is this normal behavior or have i configured something wrong? Edit: The spam consists of thousands upon thousands of lines of 2024-07-24 21:59:48.954 Info Server: http/1.1 GET http://emby_remote_ip/emby/videos/44032/hls1/main/862.ts?PlaySessionId=9c0e5ccb04ef4fa1af3a62e9ee4b2425. yocker 1248 Posted July 24, 2024 Author Posted July 24, 2024 Had just edited my post when i saw you have replyed. The entries i'm talking about is in the edit in the original post.
Solution Happy2Play 9780 Posted July 24, 2024 Solution Posted July 24, 2024 So you are saying you don't want to see the transcoding segments? As the ts number changes with every segment. But what would you like to see when media is being played? But to a point it is required playback information. 1

Been changing some network stuff and was looking through the logs to look for any possible faults when i saw all those lines and wondered what they were. I definitely want those logs! But wouldn't they be better suited in a separate log file if they are for transcoding?

Technically they are reported in server log and the ffmpeg log but just slightly different info. As one is file processing the file and the other is delivery to client/app.

Although it looks like a lot, text is so small compared with the other stuff we throw around our computers that its size is of no consequence - and in any case the log file is rotated daily, and deleted after a few days (configurable, I set it to a week). Paul Not so much the size but amount of entries that worried me, not used to see something like that in logs from other programs. Thank you all for explaining it to me!
pwhodges 2012 Posted July 25, 2024 Posted July 25, 2024 Web server logs are similar, in that every individual transaction is logged - and they're required to be kept for much longer for legal reasons. Paul
vaise 340 Posted July 25, 2024 Posted July 25, 2024 I think I posted ages back that it would be very helpful if we are hunting for issues if we could either : 1 - disable playback logging if we wish 2 - have playback logging write to a different log - keeping server activities separate.
vaise 340 Posted July 26, 2024 Posted July 26, 2024 Have had two issues today that would have been much easier to fault find if I was not also spammed by the end users watching stuff.........
rbjtech 5284 Posted July 26, 2024 Posted July 26, 2024 (edited) If you use a decent log viewer - then you can simply filter it out - on live logs if you wish. I use Advanced Log Viewer - Free on Github. Then just create an Emby template/parser - Emby uses standard Date, Type, Class, Message - so all very easy. You can then filter on anything you like, Classes, Error only etc etc. To get rid of any web notices - simple negate http .. they all disappear from the list. All new messages are auto scrolled so you can watch things live once you have setup a filter ... Reading ANY log as is (not just Emby) simply cannot be effectively done without these tools .. personally, I think they should be integrated into emby (the basics anyway). But having said all of that - the option to remove 'playback' entries at source is a good idea, especially on a busy server. Edited July 26, 2024 by rbjtech 1 1
vaise 340 Posted July 26, 2024 Posted July 26, 2024 I souse it ‘live’, hence no good with playback. Issues resolved now though so I may look at parsing in the future. But please Mr emby - add playback to a playback.log.

The point of the log is for diagnostics and, for that, context is very important. it would be difficult to separate what is "playback" activity vs not and, once you did, it would then be that much harder to derive the context when looking for issues. I personally don't see any true benefit to introducing this complexity to our logging.
vaise 340 Posted July 27, 2024 Posted July 27, 2024 I’m not a logging expert. just today I had two issues I was trying to fault find. Auto update in log is pointless when all the playback stuff is in it. In my old ‘real’ job, I could set logging levels for the web servers (info, warn, app, debug). I guess I am used to a bit of control.

Agree 100% - putting it all in one log is far easier to parse - especially as in a decent log viewer, you simply specify you want the last x minutes for example. If you are verbose logging with debug enabled, then the logs can get big and 'slow down' after a while - so I actually rotate the log file ever 4 hours. @vaise As indicated above, the 'Class' of the log also allows you to filter or exclude by function - so for all 'Playback/http' activity - emby class this as 'Server'. The log quality is pretty good tbh - you just need the tools to extract what you need. You'll likely be able to find what you want in seconds. Then add a time filter for 5 seconds before and 5 seconds after (for example) and you'll have a snapshop of everything that happended on a 'single page' or less. The parsing template is very simply - see my example below for ALV (for embyserver.txt) :- Edited July 27, 2024 by rbjtech
vaise 340 Posted July 27, 2024 Posted July 27, 2024 Does that log viewer do the following , which is all I want : 1 - show live updates 2 - remove the playback rows. If so can you give me a screenshot of that and Inwill download it when I ham back. Ta.

vaise 340 Posted July 28, 2024 Posted July 28, 2024 I installed it, it seems way too complicated. Not sure where to start with it really. Icons dont seem to match yours. I had a stroke in 2021 and maybe I will find it easier in the morning after I have eaten. The wife says I am useless come evening.....

You are almost there - you need to setup a log parser so it knows what's what in the log - goto 'more > parser patterns' and then copy the parser I've shown above. Once all the columns are good (match mine) then save. Yes it's a powerful log viewer, but once setup, you'll be able to find anything you could ever wish for .. 1
vaise 340 Posted July 28, 2024 Posted July 28, 2024 Should it be so buggy ? The more dropdown works once, but then it flashes and the app freezes, and clicking anywhere just dings the PC and I have to kill it with task manager. Its now stuck llist this, start the app, click more, then parser, it flashes up, goes away and then all crashed. I will try and un-install and re-install.

I don't have any issues at all - what version have you installed ? - I'm using 10.0.1 on Win 11 edit - ah, I see there is a new version - maybe try 10.0.1 as the new version has moved to .net 8 Edited July 28, 2024 by rbjtech
vaise 340 Posted July 28, 2024 Posted July 28, 2024 11.0.2. An uninstall and reinstall has fixed that lockup (so far) - I am back at it, but will be called for dinner soon.
