If he is using ATV it has an option to direct play media and all it would need is the smb path.  Skipping Emby.

So, the fixes from last night (permission change, and browsing to the folders rather than entering manually) borked it, and the menu then generated thumbnails for thousands of files from the share which emby knew nothing about. I changed it back and still the same, so today I deleted all the libraries and did them again from scratch this time with the permission set from the shared folder as advised and then configured the libraries and rescanned - we are now back to normal ;-).

However, I have no idea if it has fixed the erroneous transcoding thumbnails appearing, which was the start of the thread so I will need to see what happens.

Easy enough to check but have you looked at new server log to see if it is showing places Emby shouldn't be as previously mentioned?

Sorry, I have attached the log - does all look OK?

 

it seems to be working fine, I played the same file as I did the other day which created the thumbnails and is OK this time, I will poast back if it happens again.
