Menu thumbnail clips

Wasnt sure how to title this or which part of the forum.

Been using Emby for a month (bought the lifetime subscription). Not all files but some when I play say a movie the menu on emby populates with erroneous thumbnails which are obviously file parts of the played movie - how do i stip that from happening?

I am guessing when playing the movie the server is transcoding them perhaps? not sure, and spltting the movie file upinto small parts which then get indexed?

I am running Version 4.8.8.0 on a Synology NAS (DS 923) and accessing the server via firestick emby apps on my TV, another TV, and my laptop via browser, the same thing happens each time. I lpay a movie (doesnt happend with all of them) but a random movie from time to time will play but when I go back to the emby menu a bunch of thumbnails have appeared in my movies menu as shown in image.

No idea what you have done here as transcoding does not happen in any assign library paths unless you have misconfigured your setup.

How are your libraries setup?

Did you modify the transcoding path?

Thank you for the response. So my synology server has 2 folders (Movies, TV Shows) I installed Emby and pointed it to those folders. All has worked fine since install except for some random movie plays etc or TV show plays etc, which resule in the above (I added more information to my original post).

As for the the transcoding path, i can only find one reference to that which is the temporary transcoding path and that is empty (see attached) image.thumb.png.dffe064cc55b530152750b9823f39b25.png

Can you post a server log.

But your image about suggest that is content within your setup Movie library.

So there is a ffmpeg-transcode-d1886c13-4536-48ac-b25e-a721718eb131_1.txt which was created at the time I played the movie which created those thumbnails.

You want me to post that log contents here?

Please attach the log file not copy and paste.

The default transcode path is never in your library.  So the question becomes what are your library paths also?

File attached.

The paths are as follows and then replace movies with TV Shows for the TV

Log clearly shows /var/packages/EmbyServer/var/transcoding-temp/9B787B/9B787B_%d.ts for transcoding.

Have no idea how your library path smb://192.168.1.101/NAS923-Data/Videos/Movies sees the transcode path.

But @Lukewill have to comment further.

Please post the server log also.

Something really messed up with this install as librarymonitor is system stuff it shouldn't.

2024-07-20 00:01:39.040 Info LibraryMonitor: synolog (/volume1/@database/synolog) will be refreshed.
2024-07-20 00:03:09.107 Info LibraryMonitor: logs (/volume1/@appdata/EmbyServer/logs) will be refreshed.
2024-07-20 02:01:30.001 Info LibraryMonitor: ScheduledTasks (/volume1/@appdata/EmbyServer/data/ScheduledTasks) will be refreshed.
2024-07-20 02:01:34.167 Info LibraryMonitor: db (/volume1/@USBCopy/db) will be refreshed.

And you have a permissions issue here

Access to the path '/volume1/NAS923-Data' is denied.

Dev will have to comment but this install is completely broken.

@FrostByteever see anything like this?

@GrimReapercan you move to Synology, thanks.

mmm interesting. Everything is working as it should otherwise, file server access etc, and media in general, like I say just the occasionaly media menu issue showing thumbnails when playing some files.

The install was simple and straightforward

Somehow your library and Emby system are intermixed as if all of /volume1 is an issue.

weird, just a standard install - no changes apart from pointing emby to the folders.

the menu shows everything fine and as expected, the occasional metadata mismatch but easily fixed. Everything plays, it is just the occasional file that plays and creates those thumbnails in the menu - weird.

Overall it is working much better than jellyfin ever did or plex, as metadata downloads were always an issue, no issues with emby so far other than this weird thumbnail thing.

Thanks

Honestly can't say but the log suggests should be having lots of problems.

Probably a few things going on, but your library folders seem to be pointing to two separate locations

First line should look something like this:

/volume1/<shared folder>/Videos/Movies

In emby, in library, if i type /volume1, it finds it, if i then add <shared folder> which is NAS923-Data or choose it, it dont work. See image where NAS923-Data does not have an @symbol in front which the rest do. Anyway so i typed the network path instead which it says at top you can do so it does.

I have a server, a single volume called /volume1, a shared folder in there called NAS923-DATA then everything is a subfolder to that. I map driectly to the files needed on PC and point emby to the media folders.

In DSM open Control Panel...Shared Folder and look at the permissions for NAS923-Data.

Make sure the "system internal user" drop down is selected.  Does "emby" have read/write permissions?

no, it has no access - so I should change that to read/write?

Yes.  After doing that then in library setup you should be able to navigate to the movies folder and select it.

That is the confusing part to me as OP says playback is fine.  So the the config just falling back to some system level?

LOL, well that broke it ;-).

So, yes I am now able to browse to the folder rather than put in the network path. However, now the menu wnt blank, said no items found, did a rescan and is now showing the contents of a completely different folder

I think at this juncture, I will put it back to how it was, then at some point do a reinstall unless something else from the logs comes to light.

Thanks for the help, I will chime in tomorrow with some updates or to see if any more replies.

Thanks again.

Odd, but those two lines should be pointing to the same location.

Leave the permissions for the shared folder though.  If nothing else that may help your Access Denied problem as emby didn't have any write permissions to save metadata.
