Since I lost my eyesight, I have been searching for a video player that can read subtitles aloud, allowing me to follow the storyline. Some video files with switchable multilingual subtitles use soft subtitles stored as text within the video file or directory. In theory, these should be readable by accessibility tools like VoiceOver or Android TalkBack, which have long provided the necessary interfaces. On iOS/Mac, enabling Audio Descriptions, or setting Android TalkBack to read all latest updates in the detailed settings (this feedback was written using a translation tool, so the names of the settings in an English environment might not be exactly as I mentioned), allows services like Netflix to read subtitles in real-time when these switches are turned on. However, I can't find this feature on any local video player. Even though this feature request is unlikely to garner widespread support, I still hope someone will notice this missing functionality and recognize its potential demand.
