I just got a new android tv so trying out the {beta} clients.

Is it only intended to use the Android TV client and feedback on that on this device?

is it recommended to use / feedback on the pure android client on this device?

thanks

Nope.

Standard app (also monikered Universal app) = Android app

Try searching for "Emb" in your Store or sideload from:

https://emby.media/emby-for-android.html

..to note you'll lose all the AndroidTV integration...

The AndroidTV app is still far superior to the Universal App imo - definately worth trying them both and report back.

ive moved to 'app only' mode in google config, because the all singing all dancing Android TV  (home) pages which  the Emby TV app can complement were very cluttered and i couldnt find controls over them. eg i have apps being advertised to me that i have no intention of using on the apps page..front and centre. I couldnt make the apps page the primary page.

I remember being impressed on my mums android tv when emby continue watching / now playing showed up 'outside' the app. Seemed very clever but i may have to forgoe that in googles 'app only mode'..

Hi, what integration? The standard app supports even more platform features than the tv app does.

I must have had a very old version on my Shield when I last tested - as neither Audio search via the Shield remote, nor Continue Watching or Audio playback was available outside of emby - I just re-tested - using v 3.4.11 - and they are now there which is nice.   Thanks for adding those.

I'm not sure what's next on the list - but high on my list is still the need to stop using high intensity white for the text/menu overlays - it's simply too bright.   Could we maybe have an 'OLED' theme to turn them to grays ? - AndroidTV has this intensity just right.    Other than lacking SMB/real direct play, the App is now almost on-par with AndroidTV so thanks for getting there.

Yep, a fair point - this is why I used the term 'almost' .. ;)

For full clarity - the original list had 96 requests vs AndroidTV (thread link below) - with 14 remaining as of today, which i have listed below.

  • SFN hotkey to enable/disable (long-press center button)
  • Option to disable passthrough of DTS, DTS-HD, and TrueHD.  It doesn't remux audio for devices where the audio is not supported, like the ATV app does.  Shield will convert to PCM 2.0 if allowed to passthrough (CBers)
  • Ability to disable direct play for all ts files (MBSki) (3.2.80)
  • Improve the keyboard layout for searches.  The one in ATV requires less clicking/navigation (Spaceboy)
  • Add option to either log on as last user, a specific User, or always ask for user like ATV (CBers)
  • Add the additional information from ATV SFN.  Includes media info, HDR formats supported by device, etc (rbjtech)
  • Option to hide PIN when logging on like ATV (roaku)
  • Allow seeking in live TV (CharlieMurphy, MBSki)
  • Ability to cancel autoplay of next episode and still continue playing the current episode to the end (K1ng_Lear)
  • Add method to quickly jump to specific channel. ATV app has a # icon which can be clicked and then a channel number entered. (CharlieMurphy)
  • Allow the setting of the border color around posters and thumbs when in focus.  Currently white is the only color and it's hard to see with white posters/thumbs.  Suggest honoring "Accent Color" or use colors based on the theme like ATV.  Or use zoom and highlight color which ATV does
  • On the standard app with the EHS on, nothing is shown when you have the Live TV row highlighted (programs, guide etc.), just a big gap; the ATV app allows for this and does not have space for the EHS above the live tv row (Spaceboy)
  • When watching a video and using FF/RW, pause at the point of stopping the FF/RW until you press OK for playback to start, instead of playing as soon as you let go of the FF/RW button. (MBSki) - added 2024/02/09 (3.3.92)
  • FireTV Voice Search, same as #34, but for Amazon devices.

Some features we are unlikely to ever get, such as SMB access or 'differences' such as the way Chapters are scrolled etc - so they are not listed here.

If luke can either implement or inform us that a function will not be implemented in the foreseable future - then they can finally give a date to sunset AndroidTV as a supported platform.   Do I like the new Universal App ? - personally, no, I think it still has many elements of looking amateurish vs AndroidTV, but that's what they have so I'd much rather they cut losses with AndroidTV, and use the effort and polish on the Universal App to make it better than the now stagnent 4 year old AndroidTV app ...
