Emby shows playback of a user who's not streaming

I will ask Selle tomorrow if she can remember. In the meantime i have something new for you from today and the things are going more weird. Now it is Sandra again, but the dashboard switches between two sessions of her, this time without needing me to reload the page. I have recorded a 30s video of that behaviour. The video is recorded in firefox but in emby theater the behaviour is exactly the same.

Honestly i think the users don't get any errors on screen and so they don't notice that there is an issue of session handling. Otherwise they would have contacted me to ask what is wrong with the service, but i will ask them anyway.

I will attach the actual debug logs from emby and i will ask Sandra on saturday when meeting her, whether she can remember any issues.

Do you need the actual data zipped again like i sent you last time? This time i would try to not shutting down emby and extract the data while it's running. Just tell me what you need for further investigation.

I've noticed this same behavior on my install of 4.8.8.0, with random users at random times. I have yet to dig into any logs or system reporting...

Thanks for getting me the movie file for me to try and repro. So far I have not been able to

Does Selle remember the sequence of actions / events / outcomes at the time?

On Wednesday 25 August at 21:32 Boogeyman playback started on android device MiTV-MSSP3 from offset 00:23:36 in the movie - so 23 minutes in.

This continued to 21:59:54 reaching offset 00:40:42 when there was an error

Playback resumed at 22:00:03 from offset 00:40:39 and and there was a skip to the end to offset 01:38:39 at 22:00:25 which error'ed

Playback then resumed at 22:00:43 from offset 00:40:39 - there were some errors again and skips - with the last action being streaming up to offset 00:57:36 with the last request coming in from the device for that playback session being at 22:02:09

There was no indication that the playback was stopped or paused - but the emby client app after requesting the subtitles segment for offset 00:57:36, then went on to request media items info after 22:02:09 - no more playback but no indication from android app to the server that the playback stopped. What was showing on the screen after reaching offset circa 00:57 at 22:02 am on the 26th CET time?

I asked her a few minutes ago and she said that she didn't get any errors. She started the movie and watched some time and then as soon as her son came into the room, she stopped playback, because it's a horror movie and that's it. She said she has not skipped within the movie and she didn't continued watching any time after stopping playback.

So the skipping to near the end you mentioned, has to be something else and is not based on user interaction.

Same behaviour of Sandra: no issues on user/client side and normal starting and stopping playback.

As i thought, the users don't get noticed about any errors in session handling on the server side. Both users, Sandra and Selle said everything works as expected when they're streaming, otherwise they'd inform me immediatly that something's wrong with the service.

Thanks - strange though that the last segment of the movie was requested by the client app at 2024-08-25 22:00:25. Wonder if there is a button on the remote for this Android TV that could have resulted into going to the end,

The good news is that i managed to reproduce the symptom and I now have a Now Playing session showing from yesterday's playback and the client app is not even running. But my case looks different in that I exited the app where in your case the android client app was still running. I am discussing the results of my tests with the development team. A fix for my case, I would expect to also fix your scenario.

I believe it is a known issue because Emby server don't want to make client confuse when they did not correctly close the session it stead of putting device to sleep, hibernate, or turn the tv off (at least that is what we feel),... So when the client reconnect expired session could cause longer loading instead of continue playing the movie.

HI, yes we are looking into it. Thanks.
