thunderclap 52 Posted June 16, 2024 Posted June 16, 2024 I'm currently running Emby in docker on Unraid and have it configured to use the Core i7-9700K Quicksync. A friend is offering my an nVidia Quadro P4000 and I'm wondering if I'll see a significant boost in transcoding. Thanks.
Luke 42077 Posted June 16, 2024 Posted June 16, 2024 HI, yes I think that would be a healthy upgrade.
RanmaCanada 494 Posted June 17, 2024 Posted June 17, 2024 It will be faster, yes, but your 9700k has slightly better quality when it transcodes. So it's a trade off.
rbjtech 5283 Posted July 20, 2024 Posted July 20, 2024 It also depends on what you mean by 'boost'. The 9700K has a UHD630 GPU - so it's only 1 generation behind the latest, so I think you'll find it can still punch well above it's weight for transcoding - and you should easily be able to get 8-10 x 1080p simultaneous transcodes, or 3-4 x 4K simultaneoustranscodes. Certainly good enough for typical home use. The P4000 has 8Gb fixed memory, meaning however you want to cut it - you cannot use more than this. Typically speaking, 4K transcodes need ~1Gig each, so you are limited to 8 regardless of how well the card performs. On the other hand quicksync uses a configurable portion of the system memory - so on a 16Gb system, it may use 8, but on a 32Gb system it could use 16Gb as Video memory. In summary, I'd stick with the 9700K and use quicksync. 1
