This is joke, I misspelled entering a 'Display Name' when 'signing up'. And cannot believe that I can edit the email and PW but not the Display Name. Do I have delete the account to correct the. Amazed and confused ????.

Sorry but have you looked at your account settings.  But my understand the edit the ADMIN makes is a different edit.

Can someone decode this for me. In answer to the first part is yes, I have looked at the account settings but see edit links for only the email and password changes as already stated in my first post. As for:

  Just a tiny bit history. I started programming on Z80 SBC's in the mid 70's thru to PC's today from machine code thru C/C++. I used Plex up to 3 years ago, and only today have had the opportunity to reinstate the system and decided on Emby. I feel I have made a mistake here. I program servers from iot on uPc to PC basic systems but I have to admit I am defeated here.

  Apart from my error of messing up the 'signup' Display Name, clearly my fault, but with no apparent way for it to be edited I decided to just for now to continue and maybe sort that out after getting up and running.  So I just installed Emby on a new nVidia Shield and am going around in ever decreasing circles in the Emby app asking me to 'Sign in with Connect' whatever that is, but when the 5 digit ?pin? is entered nothing changes on the screen, there is a Next button a Skip and Enter IPa and Cancel. Hitting the 'Next' takes me to a screen with two options 'Enter Manually' & 'Sign Out of Connect'. Hitting the 'Enter Manually' option take me to a dialog box to enter the server IPa, which I do, along with the already filled in Port: 8096. After entering the IP of my nVidia box which I have to assume is running the Emby server as I am in the running app, we get the msg: 'Error Connecting To Server' and we are back to 'Enter Manually' or 'Sign Out of Connect'

Well, having had plex working for around 6-7 years in those early years, I just never expected that in 2024 an install of a different media server would be so obfuscated. Hands up, I am totally lost. My reason for the decision to try Emby, as I am sure all you guru's already know, and I only found out when I came to reinstate things after all these years is that Plex is now a privacy nightmare, which is why I ended up here. There was another media server mentioned, Jellyfin, but decided on Emby as I had heard of it even back in the Plex days.

  I am sorry for pouring my troubles out here, but it is just a heads up to whoever came up with this cryptic adventure game to get a server running. I am no beginner, and have given my short CV just to show what a total clown I clearly am. But here is the rub, if I am in this state how many Joe Bloggs out there that will never be an Emby user, and I assume that all of you guys and girls here are passionate Emby people that would promote the use of Emby over any other.

So with that I guess this may be goodbye as I really do not know what to do next to break the continual loop. What a fiasco and it is 2024.

  So to keep your server space tidy if someone knows their way around this adventure game would like to instruct me how to cleanly and efficiently remove the account so as not clog your servers I will comply with your instruction and do so as I have hit the brick wall and do not know, or have any further idea of how to proceed, such a shame.

  But a thank you anyhow for the reply even though I can not decipher it.

I have tried a couple of YouTube vids of which are absolutely no use at all, but if anyone can direct me to one that actually says something coherent I shall be only to pleased to have a last try before an attempt with JellyFin or at worst way back to the data hiving Plex, where I guess that I would be up and running in about 5 mins max.

This is your first post in this forum. Have you considered creating a thread detailing your troubles and asking for assistance?

It sounds like you've not actually installed the server software and are just trying to use a client app first (likely emby theater).

Thank you darkassassin07 for your reply.  You asked what's so hard about sending a PM (Private Message) to the person that can fix your name....  the answer to that is I have absolutely no idea how to do that, I guess when you know how, it is indeed not hard to do, but as of now I do not know.

No, I had not, as again I would not know how to do this.

Just to explain how I arrived here to begin with. After my stupid error of mistyping the user name on signup and finding for some unknown bazaar reason that Emby does not let the user edit/change this, I googled 'Emby Display Name mistake entry' and after trawling through a few links of no relevance finally a link took me directly to this page where sven01 seems to have the exact same issue as me. So as I am doing right now, I just clicked 'Reply to this topic ...'  at the footer of the page. So that is the extent of my expertise and experience in here, just the time it took to type my wall of text, no more, no less.

Point taken with regard to the app being the client and not the server. Just double checked 'Google Play Store' and there is only one app listed, which I guess is the client, really ?, Sigh... no option for client and/or server ???. 

Ok, attempted to install server 4.8.8.0 and the installer displays a graphic 'This app was built for an older version of Android and doesn't include the latest privacy protections - hit OK and states App not installed. Repeated with the beta version 4.9.0.24 and exactly the same with that. So I guess any newbe like myself is going have one heck of problem with getting Emby up and running, would you not agree ?, remember, unlike experts like yourself we are just new kids on the block trying get media server running that we have never seen before.

I will 'keep at it' for short while and see if I can crack this adventure game before relenting back to Plex or JellyFin, but it does seem that anyone with issues like me to be conversing in here it is implied they should already know exactly what to do, which seems a bit catch 22 to me, please correct me if you I am wrong here and I shall respectfully bow out.

So in summery, how do I  1) PM (Private Message) to the person  and  2) install the server when it is not accepted due to privacy protections ????

There is, but as a first step I'd suggest reading through few KB (Knowledge Base) articles to get a general idea how Emby functions and what are the requirements.

So I have moved forward a tad to the point of a failed server install of both  com.emby.embyserver_4.8.8.0.apk and com.emby.embyserver_4.9.0.24.apk due to the dialog stating

  'This app was built for an older version of Android and doesn't include the latest privacy protections'  and then reports  'not installed'

I have attached the .jpg screen shot of this error, was apprehensive to try and send this just in case I get another - Jesus Christ Mate - from our resident expert darkassassin07 that there is something else I have done wrong that is so easy, but have taken the plunge and attached it and hope this does not cause any grief to anyone, especially darkassassin07, so sorry in advance if I have not done this correctly . He has a great and very fitting 'Display Name' don't you think ?.

So, still no server running due to this error on brand new nVidia Shield Pro. I mention this in case this may be specific to these boxes?.

I must reiterate, if I have these issues, how many other plebs like me are attempting this Emby adventure world wide, and were not as lucky as I to stumble on the Google link to this page and got the superb obfuscated direction from darkassassin07. If I represent just a fraction of a % of the worlds potential Emby users that have attempted to get it up and running, just how many have just gone elsewhere, can you imagine what that number must be. I say this a I assume you do want new Emby users ???.  Well, not so sure that darkassassin07 would be bothered about that, just as long as he's ok.

Sorry for the trouble my Wall of text seems to be causing here for everyone, but hoping for some positive direction.

HI Luke, thks for the reply.  Yes, I now realise that the Play store app is indeed the client, but I have been ridiculed for not realising this by one of your condescending experts darkassassin07, and have been told by GrimReaper that they are indeed BOTH in the playstore and am awaiting a reply from him such that I can see why/where I made the dumb mistake of thinking that if there is only one PlayStore app then it must be both the client and server combined, but GrimReaper assures me that there are two (2), so where did I go wrong to cause the vitriol that is being thrown at me by one of your so called experts ie darkassassin07. I genuinely want to find out why it has all exploded into to this fiasco of down right unfriendly and unhelpful answers from you resident dark expert.

Ok on the 'More Details'. But it is saying it is not fit for purpose, so is there no updates to the server app from Emby as surely this cannot be acceptable to be warned about a possible security risk as it is implying. Are you saying the worlds Emby server users are installing this on their systems regardless of these warnings, if so, why is the app not corrected as both versions I tried gave the same warning and would have thought that the very latest com.emby.embyserver_4.9.0.24.apk would not be showing this,but naturally while it may be the latest I naturally do not know when it was compiled so I guess to be fair it may be the latest, but the latest could be years old.  I just cannot believe that people are installing this when it is being blocked by the OS, especially in this day and age where almost every other mouse/kbd click can mean potential problems.  What have I got wrong here Luke, am I the only one that takes note of these warnings. I am a bit stunned on this one that there has been no update to correct this.

Sorry Luke I was not meaning yourself.  I assume you can see all the posts that have occurred in my only few hours of ever even knowing of this community. Have you not seen the resident expert darkassassin07 initial condescending reply to my first help request. I can paste here if not so you may understand where my comment was directed. If you check that out I think you may change you mind that This is a kind-hearted community. As you can see, certainly not toward me for whatever reason. Do you think I am over reacting here ??.

Any answers/hints to my last questions to you regarding the OS saying it's not safe to install ???.  And where in the playstore there are two (2) Emby entries one client one server ??? that I apparently missed somehow, and still cannot find more than one as GrimReaper stated. Have not had a reply from him as yet so any hints would be much appreciated.

There is no server app in the store, my reply was to the question is there an option to have both client and server on the Shield - yes, there is, and I've given you a link where the server install process for Nvidia Shield is.

Reading through this thread the main thing I came away with is that you are either incredibly dense or incredible naïve. It was clearly spelled out that the best solution was to send a private message and you even were pointed toward where to do that. Also this method of sending PMs is quite common all over the internet so should require little hand holding to get that far.

Also few boards I have ever dealt with allow users to change their names, display or otherwise, on a whim whenever they like. That would make the database maintenance quite complex and could lead to users fighting over names. There are also other considerations that make users name needing to be hard to change. But that does not really matter because the method given works if anyone simply follows the easy to use instructions. I have even run across boards that require super user intervention to change emails and passwords. But those, usually, are high security boards that "regular" users generally cannot access or even would want to.

I believe you were treated quite well by everyone that responded and, as soon as you followed the simple instructions given, your name was successfully changed

I run into people all the time that don't read or even try to follow instructions or even read manuals or instruction sheets unless all else fails. Like asking for directions us males and some females just fight the idea that we cannot figure out things for ourselves. 

But this is the world as it is and we have no recourse but to live in it and interact with it. I find as I have become older I need help of various kinds more and more often but I do, usually, read and follow instructions when I can and I fine that if i do that most things become simple, like getting names changed or other easy actions, and that means I can actually do stuff instead of whining on message boards.

But each to their own and i quite sure Emby will survive just fine no matter what you or i think.

BTW: There is a difference between whining and being persistent.

I hope you learn exactly what works best for you and that you figure out how to ask questions so you get the responses you want or need more quickly.
Lastly: One reason to require PMs for name changes is to reduce the possibilities of hacking as that gives a trail to follow if things get screwed up.

I have now downloaded both com.emby.embyserver_4.8.8.0.apk and got it across to the nVidia and attempted to install it but get warnings that    'This app was built for an older version of Android and doesn't include the latest privacy protections' as per the earlier attached .jpg. So tried with and com.emby.embyserver_4.9.0.24.apk and to my surprise the same warning.

That really is worrying and I would like to know if perhaps that is because the host machine is a nVidia Shield ???. Or perhaps the OS version is wrong version to handle Emby and I should change this before continuing, but if so to what.

Is this software safe to use with a warning of this calibre ??.  I think Luke was implying to force the install, surely this can't be correct if the OS is complaining ??.

That is something for the Devs to comment on. Number of users run their server on a Shield (hence dedicated KB section just for it) though, tbh, it might not be the ideal platform to run your server on - Shield is an awesome client, mush less so as a server device as it simply wasn't designed for that purpose and it does bring certain restrictions hardware-wise. From my own experience - late 2010s - it certainly gave me more trouble than it was worth., ended up on a NUC for my portable server, I'm just sorry I didn't do it sooner instead of getting few gray hairs fighting with Shield for months. In any case, we're getting OT, you should open a new topic in a dedicated forum section.

Thank you darkassassin07 for your reply.  You asked what's so hard about sending a PM (Private Message) to the person that can fix your name.... the answer to that is I have absolutely no idea how to do that 

It's honestly baffling that someone needs help with such a task. Hence the 'vitriol' as you call it. I genuinely can't understand how you could have been on the internet and/or programming since the 70's as you claim; but can't figure out some of the most basic tasks like clicking on the massive green 'create new topic' button at the top of the website, or sending a private message to another user.

Just the fact that you couldn't figure those out on your own means you either put in 0 effort to explore the site in the slightest way and expect to have someone hold your hand through even the tiniest detail; or you have such a low cognitive ability that you genuinely shouldn't be operating a computer, let alone any form of web server. (I am being incredibly serious with that statement, despite how harsh that is)

Your very first post here was an exasperated question in an 8 month old discussion that already contained the solution to your problem, without paying any attention to that solution; then when reiterated for you, you still struggled to understand incredibly basic instructions claiming to be 'totally lost' and launching into a long irrelevant tirade about your history. Ending with you throwing your hands in the air like a child and asking to have your account deleted.

 

That is where I chimed in because honestly:
