Emby Dead After Sonoma Update

Hello,

I installed Sonoma after putting it off and Emby on my Apple TV 4K began saying it couldn't play certain items that worked fine when played off the drive. Certain things worked, certain things didn't. Finally I decided to look into the support forums which only made my problem worse. I caught onto a thread about someone uninstalling the server and evidently and potentially needing to start over. I was frustrated but came to terms with that because I have quite a few collections, playlists, and custom series art I'll now need to rebuild.

So I uninstall Emby on my Mac M1 2020 and downloaded the file available in the Downloads section of the site, now Emby does not open at all. I am following all the correct steps in opening the package as advised by the instructions, but Emby doesn't present an icon, open after loading, and does not seem to signal that the app attempted to open. For kicks, I downloaded the non-M1 version and that gave me an icon and opened the app, but would not actually load anything in a browser. Just kept saying not found. I then tried to download the M1 again and back to the same result there.

I will say, this issue seemed to be isolated to certain shows and items and not my entire file path, since certain things played. Just to clarify again, none of the files I'm attempting are corrupt. I'm at a bit of a loss here and I don't have logs because I can't get into my server. Any advice would be appreciated. Provided as much info as I can upfront based on things I read in the other threads. I apologize for the length.

Hi, did you try opening the Emby web app in the browser?

Yes, that is the way I use it normally on my MacBook. I mentioned it here "For kicks, I downloaded the non-M1 version and that gave me an icon and opened the app, but would not actually load anything in a browser. Just kept saying not found."

Please attach the emby server log, which you can get from the server data folder:

Emby Server Data Folder

Thanks.

As I mentioned in my post there are no logs because the app is deleted... Now it won't launch after reinstall... That is the issue of my post... I checked your steps just to be sure and there is no emby folder.

Right, as expected, you ask your same 2 questions in every thread regardless of someone answering it in their original post and then you sit and wait for the community to resolve it. How you're on the Emby team I truly have no idea.

But did you check the data folder to see if any log files are being generated? It might be starting up and then immediately shutting down for some reason.

If there are none, then can you please indicate how exactly you installed Emby server? Thanks.

I scoured endless threads before I made this post. I've seen all the attempts at rectifications through logs. My issue isn't that the server is crashing. My issue is that after I deleted the app, it now no longer opens at all as if I'm not clicking anything. There are no Emby resources on my system. As I mentioned in my last-last comment, I followed the exact instructions Emby provides on the Downloads page. Again, just asking questions of things I've already answered.

One of the biggest things to remember as tech specialist, since that is what I do in my regular life: All breakages and issues boil down to common denominators. You do not need to ask for a log or ask the same questions over and over again to find the common denominator. I am sure you have deal with enough server breakages, so rather than asking basic questions that don't lead anywhere, try asking questions relevant to the solutions you've experienced before on here. Rather than asking to see a log, you can easily suggest "After upgrading to Sonoma, another user realized that the Emby server was starting up and crashing due to ______. Does this sound like something you might have done?"

That is a valuable question and solution-driven answer, my friend.

Hi, yes I fully understand what you're saying. The server isn't starting, but in order to help you we need to understand how far it's getting in the process of trying to start.

That's why I asked you to check if there are any files in the logs folder. The other thing you can do is try installing the server again on top of itself, making sure to follow the instructions on the download page about dragging it into Applications. The server will not run properly if that isn't followed.

If you got as far as an icon showing up, then there should be a log file because the logging is initialized prior to attempting to launch the tray icon.

I don't believe there is a readymade example of this to refer you to. I don't recall this being reported before.

I just don't even know how I have to say for the third time that absolutely nothing happens. It is absolutely beyond me how you refuse to move past this, if it was something I could solve by looking through your forums, I would have solved it myself. You truly are so unbelievably unhelpful, I have gone back to Plex. It never did this to me.

I hope you don't do something like this for a living, and all the best to you.

Hi, but don't you want a personal media server and not one that puts all of your information into the cloud?

I'm here, ready, willing and happy to help you. The questions that I'm asking are just part of the process of narrowing down where the problem is.
