Multi part movie doesn't behave correctly in Emby

Recommended Posts

This is a Reddit post i made that describes the problem better with text and pics:
https://www.reddit.com/r/filebot/s/QQlNtkyiXn

In short; I have this movie, "Logistics" (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8273150/) which has a total runtime of 857 hours. But it is split up in multiple files. I have tried putting every part in its own folder, according to the Emby support articles about naming (https://emby.media/support/articles/Movie-Naming.html)

/Movies
   /The Dark Knight (2008)
      The Dark Knight (2008) - pt1.mp4
      The Dark Knight (2008) - pt2.mp4

That just made it worse (https://ptpimg.me/526c42.jpg).
It doesn't appear correctly in Emby; every part now appear as a standalone movie in the library.

Please help.

you are doing name space hyphen space part
you need name hyphen part, no spaces

So like  The Dark Knight (2008)-pt1.mp4
Not, The Dark Knight (2008) - pt1.mp4

See how that works for you

Hi.  They don't have to be in their own folder.  All the files can be in one folder but need to be named properly.

The " - " is fine but I don't see you having named the files that way in your screenshot...

A caveat though - depending on how many parts this has, it may be possible we run into some sort of limit we've never tested.  How many files are there?

I'm doing some testing on my test server 🤣😂

This 1 is fun to work with.

Stay tuned 👍

Ok tried setting it as a TV show.

Folder name " Logistics ( 2012 ) [TvdbId=168513] "

image.png.890f322df2674462bdc3dcefdee45894.png

Resolved to this, with NO metadata, can be the lack of metadata from TVDB.

Will try with a multi part Movie, I think there is a limit to how many parts it can contain.

According to ops imbd screenshot it looks like a series

Not sure why you're under that impression, if it were a series it'd be listed as such and have Episode guide just above the title. If you're basing that on TV-PG rating, it just means it's classified as TV movie.

Some testing as a Movie with multi part

Started with pt01 to pt09

looking good.

Folder name " Logistics (2012) [TvdbId=168513] "

image.png.aa7766567e7865864a2088953ee82ffe.png

image.thumb.png.d52182d0d449ee90414a531a55ffb2fe.png

Then adding pt10 - and above.

image.thumb.png.b95648580632ce35d41329796157ce0f.png

This shows that there is a part limit of 9 parts.

@Håkon I would combine day1 - 3, 4 - 6 and soon till you get under the 9 part limit.

Try with something like this

Nice troubleshooting, also note for reference that Split video files article states:

Quote

Split video files (file stacking)

The following are default stacking extensions that can be added to file names. # can be 1 through 9 or A through D. Stacking is supported for video files (but only when each video is in its own folder as in the example below) as well as dvd and blu-ray folder structures. Split videos require all parts be in the same movie folder with no other videos present in that folder.

  • part#
  • cd#
  • dvd#
  • pt#
  • disk#
  • disc#

You can also use:

  • moviename#.ext

Where # can be A through D.

Yep, just posted it, it does come up every now and then - though very seldom.

So the best Op can do is combine the files till its under the limit.

Yeah, that'd be one approach - though he'd still end up with 90+ hours each part.

Another way would be make it as a TV show, as you did in your testing, and fill metadata manually - after all, there ain't much of it, it shouldn't take a lot of time and having it in episodic format would make it somewhat more manageable/trackable IMHO.

Yep - just combine into 1 and use chapter points to split the days.   Pretty sure the mkv tools will automatically add a chapter for each file added.

It's an option, but yes.

In this case I'd be more concerned whether the combined file would exceed any other limits in its format (though I had no trouble earlier today making a mere 42 hour file of 98GB).

Tried setting it as a series, as you said.

Then this happened (see attached file). Only two episodes appeared. Have tried restarting emby server, deleting metadata and rescan library.
Even if i found Logistics in TVDB and i used the ID from TVDB to identify Logistics, it couldn't find anything.

I am not far from deleting Logistics in its entirety. It is not worth the hassle.

Btw, can anyone confirm that Logistics is without sound?

If you’re going to set it as a series then you need to follow TV naming guidelines. Home videos might be your best bet.

Because the providers list it as a movie.  You can not cross match movie and tv as they query specific movie or tv endpoints.  So if you went the TV route you would have to manually apply all metadata/images.

And yes do to naming scheme you will have issues.  Probably have to remove all the ptxx as S01Exx will cover it.

I renamed each part according to emby tv series naming scheme (change ptxx to S01Exx and so on). I know it is not a series, but atleast it behaves nicely now and doesn't wreak havoc in my library looking like 37 copies of the same cover :) Yes, I had to add a few pictures manually, but that is a small price to pay.

Thank you everyone for the helpful comments!!! :)
