frankie64 9 Posted June 7, 2024 Posted June 7, 2024 So I was running the server on a dell 7050 series under Ubuntu linux (I7 8 core), with 32 GB of ram. So i decided to switch to another machine i had which was an AMD Ryzen 9, 3900 (4GHz) 8 core system. I noticed that in this environment the transcoding ran significantly worse, transcodes would consume >80 cpu. both units have SSD's the AMD also has 32GB of ram and a very fast ssd with write speeds in excess of 5,000 KB/s. My ask here is what is the best systems/OS to run the emby server on. (I have lots of different hardware available). Thanks in advance, Frank
Happy2Play 9781 Posted June 7, 2024 Posted June 7, 2024 (edited) Yes Intel has hardware capabilities (QuickSync) beyond what AMD can offer. With AMD as you have seen will be more dependant on CPU vs iGPU on Intel. But will need to see ffmpeg logs to see possible HWA methods used assuming you are a premiere users. frankie64 9 Posted June 7, 2024 Author Posted June 7, 2024 is linux or windows better as a core OS for running emby server on? And yes I am a premiere user have been for about 5 years now.
Happy2Play 9781 Posted June 7, 2024 Posted June 7, 2024 Yes currently everything is only done in software. >>>>>> Selected Codecs Decoder Automatic software decoder Encoder x264 Max Bitrate: 781 Mbit/s Color Formats: YUV420P, YUVJ420P, YUV422P, YUVJ422P, YUV444P, YUVJ444P, NV12, NV16, NV21, YUV420P10, YUV422P10, YUV444P10, NV20, GRAY8, GRAY10 - Bit Depths: 8, 10, 12, 14 Profiles: Baseline Profile (Level 6.2), Main Profile (Level 6.2), High Profile (Level 6.2), High 10 Profile (Level 6.2), High 4:2:2 Profile (Level 6.2), High 4:4:4 Predictive Profile (Level 6.2) >>>>>> FindVideoEncoder - MediaType: h264, UseHardwareCodecs: True, HWA-Mode: Automatic Info Checking: 'x264' Info Check successful - selecting 'x264' >>>>>> FindVideoDecoder - MediaType: h264, UseHardwareCodecs: True, HWA-Mode: Automatic Info Checking: 'Automatic software decoder' Info Check successful - selecting 'Automatic software decoder' I will guess if you went to Transcoding and changed from Yes to Advanced you do not see any decoders or encoders for hardware correct? Will have to look for possible requirements for AMD. 1 minute ago, frankkahle said: is linux or windows better as a core OS for running emby server on? frankie64 9 Posted June 8, 2024 Author Posted June 8, 2024 I replaced the video card in it with a radeon RX 5500 series card. huge difference. transcoding hardly causes a blip now. and I can see all of the hardware decoders now under advanced settings. Thanks. 1
