Dolby Vision tinted green, but is colored properly when transcoded

My Dolby Vision movies are tinted extremely green when direct played, but are properly colored when transcoded to a different resolution/bitrate. What’s going on here?

Can you elaborate as every client will likely do something different.  Probably need the media info for the file also.

This issue occurs on the web on my MacBook, and on the iOS app. Infuse plays this perfectly. Emby only has proper colors when transcoding.

Hi, we are looking into it. Thanks for reporting.

Yes to clarify:

When direct-playing a DV video, it is tinted green. When transcoding to a different resolution/bitrate, it is tinted normally (no green), but it is too dark. There is currently no way to properly view a DV video within Emby.

It’s not just Dolby Vision it’s also HDR videos

@Lukesince I've experienced the same problem, I tried looking around what's causing it.

@mannyrothmancheck if you have the same results as me.

The green-tinted Dolby Vision file playback ONLY happens to me when the audio is transcoded. For example, if I play a file with Dolby Vision Profile 8 and it transcodes the audio (in my case, because the Apple TV doesn't support TrueHD Atmos) I get the green tint. If I play the same file, but DISABLE transcoding audio = no green tint.

So I assume the problem has something to do with that.

Maybe there is a workaround with that as well? The green tinting is quite obvious and nothing I want to have while watching.

This makes all Dolby vision files unwatchable on the Google TV since it needs to transcode the audio.

Kinda surprised this has been broken for 6 months and no fix... Must not be that many people playing Dolby vision files.

I just ran into this problem using an Nvidia Shield (2019), which allegedly supports Dolby Vision.  I was presented a warning that says "This video is not compatible with your display. It is straight Dolby Vision which is not supported by your system. Colors will most likely be incorrect."  Indeed everything is tinted green.

Nice to have the warning, although its still confusing knowing the Shield supports Dolby Vision.  Any insight?

Hi, is it possible to completely avoid transcoding? I am a Premiere user and I have it included even though I don't need it. I just want my files to play in their original quality, video and audio, and if any of them don't play, I have to manually activate the transcoding so I can play them on the incompatible device. For example, the audio is always transcoded to AAC for many devices that support much higher quality.

Hi, Emby apps will always direct play whenever it is possible to do so.

General Dolby Vision Information

  • Turning on Dolby Vision on Your Shield:

Go to: Settings -> Device Preferences -> Display & Sound -> Dolby Vision. Toggle it on.

  • If the Dolby Vision Option is Missing:

Ensure your resolution is set to “4K 59.940 Hz Dolby Vision and HDR10 Ready” (for the USA) or probably 50 Hz (for the UK) under: Device Preferences -> Display & Sound.

Make sure the Dolby Vision slider is turned on.

    Use a HDMI 2.0b or 2.1 cable.

  • TV Settings that Might Block Dolby Vision:

    Sony A95L Example:

Enhanced format (4K/120): Dolby Vision doesn't work.

Enhanced format: Dolby Vision does work.

  • Brand-Specific Information:

Samsung: Does not support Dolby Vision, opting instead for HDR10+.

LG 4K TVs: Ensure HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color is turned on for the HDMI port connected to the Shield. The location of this setting might vary with different versions of the WebOS UI.

  • Other Considerations:

HDMI Port Differences: If using an HDMI 2.1 port, try switching to an HDMI 2.0 port for different results.

Audio Processing: Some TVs disable Dolby Vision if "Dolby audio processing" is turned on.
