Live TV stops playing

I've recently been having a problem where periodically (say every few hours), Live TV will stop playing and drop me to the Guide. When I close the app and reopen it in a web browser, I'm seeing SQLitePCL.pretty.SQLiteException. I checked my library.db with "sqlite3 library.db "PRAGMA integrity_check" and it came back OK.

Running Ubuntu 22.04 Emby Server 4.8.7.0, log file attached

Where are you seeing that ? Cannot see it in the log you attached.

I do see exceptions like this

MediaBrowser.Common.Extensions.ResourceNotFoundException: MediaBrowser.Common.Extensions.ResourceNotFoundException: Resource not found. Type: Object, Id: 06044cf0e6f93cdae5f285c9ecfaaeb4_01413a525b3a9622ce6fdf19f7dde354_native_e35bc8df39ab263c2c7ed7966836cabd_a05a930b01916b61a5ec5067be201855

Which Emby client app and version were you using ?

And are there any ffmpeg log files created for this streaming?

The log has requests from Emby Web, Emby Theater and Android TV

OK, it just happened again, I've attached the server log.

I use Emby Theater on my PC, and use Emby Web on that same PC to view and change settings. That's where I see the SQLLite errors when the TV stops and I try to login to the server to check things.

I use Android TV on the TV downstairs. When the TV streaming stops, it happens on both devices simultaneously (they're both viewing the same channel). The log file attached was taken right after it happened this afternoon. There is no recent ffmpeg.log, last one was two days ago.

Hi, I don’t see that in this log. Can you show us what you see in the web browser? Thanks.

I looked at the log file I sent you guys and I saw problems with the MusicBrainz plugin, I uninstalled it and now I'm monitoring things. I'll respond back if my problem persists.

Ok, TV stopped again just now.

I tried to login from Emby Web and got the SQL error. I was monitoring the transcoding-temp folder also and I noticed it removed a folder within it after the crash, now Emby TV is back without me restarting the service or rebooting the server.

Ok, pretty sure I solved this. Looking at the logs again, I noticed the Live TV stopped when /var/lib/emby/transcoding-temp got full. That led me to analyze my disks and file system. Turns out that I had the problem described here;

https://packetpushers.net/blog/ubuntu-extend-your-default-lvm-space/

During my install of Ubuntu, I accepted the defaults, which did not use all the available space for the root partition which made it easy for transcoding files to use all the free space. After extending my LVM, now my Use% is 20%, instead of 91% like it was before. No crashes since.

I still don't see the SQL error you're talking about within the logs, was it presenting it on the web UI? In any case, yes right at the end of that log it indicated the problem.

Quote

InnerException: System.IO.IOException: No space left on device : '/var/lib/emby/transcoding-temp/7c5b8b50431b4c74ac38d27a93b62fb2/0000061.ts'

The earlier log you posted didn't have this error though so you may still have issues, but I hope not. :) transcoding-temp is only used when a transcode needs to be performed, a remux (which is usually audio being converted), or I also see a log for directstream and it looks like the player didn't support the audio bitrate but the log otherwise indicates it was just copying the audio stream so not really too sure on that but if a stream is direct playing this folder doesn't get used at all.

I saw the SQL error in the Web UI, but that was probably caused by the no free space condition.

I think it's stable now, but one thing that's always confused me is Direct Play for Live TV.

When should that be used? I have an HDHomeRun with a CableCard. Right now I turned off "Direct Play Live TV" in the Android TV app and it seems stable, playing smoothly.

Generally speaking "Direct Play for Live TV" is preferred as it does not transcode/compress(degrade) the original stream...

... but if buffering is happening then well you need to find the best options yourself...

So just leave it off (for now) if it works for you 😊 but look for ways to make direct play work...

Ultimately, what solved this was unchecking "Enable Still Watching prompt" in the Playback settings of the Android TV app. I never saw the prompt until I happened to catch it yesterday.

So, I had two issues - free space and Still Watching, both solved.

How frequently does that setting check for activity?

Hi, that’s every three hours. Thanks for the feedback.
