Hey, so I just moved my server to a new location with different internet, because I am only going to be here temporarily I decided it would probably be easier to just make it so my setup is only local and no remote connections, I was able to get it so I can connect to the server locally, however every time I try to play anything I immediately get a playback error. If anyone could help me out that would be great, I am attaching the logs here.

Hi, was there an ffmpeg log?

Any updates? It seems super weird because no hardware changed unless something got messed up in the move

Ok new update, I can play things just fine on my phone, but on different devices on the same network it does not work. I though maybe it was a profile issue so I had them switch to my account to test but I was still getting this error.

Is this using the same media files as you were trying on the iPad ? and is the Emby for iOS the same version on iPhone and iPad? - or is the phone Android ?

The logs showed Direct Streaming and Direct Play exceeding maximum bitrate of 4000000 and would need transcoding but for some reason the transcode was not started

2024-05-19 19:34:07.631 Info App: Bitrate exceeds DirectPlay limit: media bitrate: 7990867, max bitrate: 4000000
2024-05-19 19:34:07.631 Info App: Bitrate exceeds DirectStream limit: media bitrate: 7990867, max bitrate: 4000000

This was with Emby for iOS version 2.2.17 on the iPad

Could you get a log file covering a test of the same media file on the iPad and the Phone and the outcome

Please give the time of each test when providing the emby server log (and include the ffmpeg logs if present)

Thanks

So I tried playing it on an iphone and an ipad, it works on the iphone but not on the ipad. I did the iphone first and it played, then I tried on the ipad right after and got an error. The timestamp should be 2024-05-23 18:22:38.322 where it starts. Attached are the ffmpeg log of which there was only one, and the emby server log. If there is anything else you need please let me know.

These logs are from the 6th May and not 23rd. Logs cover period 2024-05-05 23:59 to 2024-05-06 19:43 running EmbyServer version  4.8.5.0

If that isn't the right one I can just rerun the test after work, but I am pretty sure this is the right log

Here is also the updated emby server log, sorry about that, the previously given time stamp should work

Thanks @Riptide126for the corresponding logs. I can see a difference and in the case of the iPhone test the transcode was started - the media was being transcoded because of the high bit rate. For the iPad for some reason the transcode was not started. Your tests were not exactly like for like - in that you were using a different user account for the iPad test from that for the iPhone. Would prefer comparison tests to be done using the same account

I see we have an updated version of the Emby of iOS app out now - with versions 2.2.20 and 2.2.21 addressing video playback issues.

Could you update the app on the iPad to the latest available and try again - using same user account you did the test on the iPhone and let me have the server log for that test - as well as any ffmpeg log file generated - please test with the same video as before - and please compare the app playback settings on the iPhone and iPad and make sure they are the same for this test.

Thanks

Sorry I was super busy this weekend, finally got around to this, I have attached the emby server log and ffmpeg log file, the timestamp should be around 2024-05-28 21:46:54.934. I first tried it on the account that the ipad is normally used on and it failed, I then switched to the same account I use on the iphone and it failed, and finally I tried on the iphone and it played immediately. If there is anything else you need from me please let me know and once again thank you so much for you help.

I don't see an ffmpeg process kicking off when the ipad is used, which would be needed since the bitrate is capped at 4 Mbps and the media is about 40 Mbps. These are local devices right? If the playback quality is set to auto, try moving up to a higher bitrate, it might be able to direct play instead.

Yea is there a reason for setting the quality setting so low on the local network?

I attached a photo of my settings, it says that I do have home network quality set to auto, unless there is a different setting you guys are talking about

Since this is a per client setting this if from the client you are having an issue with correct?

But with this being a LAN connection I don't really understand why there 4Mb limit is applied.  @Lukeis that the default fallback for this client on Auto?

I guess one could test changing from Auto to a higher quality to see if playback changes.

So I tried changing that setting to auto on the ipad, and I still got the same issue, ive attached updated logs, the timestamp should be somewhere around 2024-05-29 20:34:38.133.

Try setting it to the highest bitrate instead, still don't see an ffmpeg process kicking off to transcode either way.

Tried it and it still did not work, im attaching the new logs, should be right at the very end of them I just did it

Since this is a device specific issue have you unistalled the app clearing all data and reinstalled?

What did you set it to?

I would assume max.

&MaxStreamingBitrate=200000000

But am guess a specific client issue that needs cleared/uninistalled and reinstalled.  With one device working and another not.

So I tried simply uninstalling and reinstalling the app and had the same issue, do I need to clear out some stored data or something before I reinstall?
