Dune4K video not working

New here, and I’ve done some searching but kind of confused on if I’m just having an error or this is the 4K DV issue people are having with AppleTV4K and Emby.

I have the Dune 4K version ripped in MKV format on my server and left it as is on the rip, so still in MKV container. I don’t use compression tools etc after ripping. The file displays as: 4K Dolby Vision HEVC - Dolby - TrueHD in my server when I open the movie graphic before clicking play.

Equipment: AppleTV4K 3rd gen (latest) and Sonos Beam Gen 2. I’ve also tested this on a different AppleTV4K on a 5.1.2 Denon system and a different soundbar on another TV. All the same issue, get sound, but no video.

When I click Play I get the audio but there is no video. The server dashboard shows:

Emby for Apple TV 1.8.8 (2)

Stream: MKV (64mbps)

—> HLS (96 mbps 241 fps)

Converting audio to compatible codec

Video: 4K Dolby Vision HEVC

-> Direct Play (64 mbps)

Audio: English TRUEHD 7.1 (Default)

-> Transcode (AC3 384 kbps)

The 1080P version I have uploaded plays just fine. So I’m assuming it’s related to the DV? I just figured it would cut the DV if this is the case and convert the video to something else. I’m testing Emby while running a Plex server (new at that too) but the video works there.

Thanks!

Worth giving it a go with Infuse ?

To be honest, I’m not sure what happens if you play a DV only file without a HDR or other compatibility stream.  If the ATV app can’t play DV then I guess you will get what you see, just a black screen.  I suppose you are expecting it to then try and transcode. I suspect that is not something that is not currently implemented and I don’t know how reliably we can even check that it is a DV only file.

Can you please attach the ffmpeg and server logs for your playback test?

I can. Is there anything I need to edit or remove from these before attaching them? I did a find/replace on the downloaded files of my local ip. Not even sure it matters but as I said completely new at this.

You will need to use the tools that are based on the work quietvoid created.  They are on doom9 in the encoding section.

HDR and DV support on Apple TV with Emby have been a dog and pony show since day 1. If you really want to use that horrible device for Emby you need Infuse. Apple is horrible for support outside of their ecosystem.

It would be better for you to just replace the crApple TV with an Andoird player like a Shield or 3rd Gen Firecube.  DV is 100% proprietary, and there are multiple profiles that you need to learn to understand in regards to what can play on what device. You not only need to make sure your TV can support whatever proflie your file is, you need to ensure your box can as well.

Thanks for the post. I’ve looked at the shield before but for the room I’d be streaming in I’d rather just use the Infuse app if that would work property. It’s cheaper than a shield.
