Any way to undo the "improved" tag sorting. Another junk "upgrade" and I have to manually drag the new tags now. Option to default sort maybe?

Posted

Hi, what do you mean exactly?

Posted

Used to be you just added tags and they automatically sorted in alphabetical order. Looks like it's been changed more like a Playlist so new ones go to the bottom and have to be dragged in the alpha order. Is that the only option now? Manually sorting all new tags. Takes 5 times as long. PS - If you click on a tag now a windows opens and just freezes with no info.

What's the most dreaded words in Emby?????? Please restart  the server to finish applying updates.

Actually they were never sorted explicitly in alphabetical order. they have always just been displayed in the order they were added.

The only thing that has changed is that drag handles were recently added to control that, but you're right. It's unnecessary to show them for tags, so we'll hide them.

Hi, I was previously finding (with music) that both Genres and Tags would always show in alphabetical order in the Edit window (which was good) and mostly in alphabetical order when displayed on the relevant pages, but not always. Therefore, in many instances, they were mixed up and I could never figure out how to correct this manually...

The recent addition of the "drag and drop" reordering has been helpful for 'fixing' the order of the previously mixed up ones, but has also resulted in changing the order of many other displays where it was previously 'alphabetically correct'. I think this could be somewhat related to what @kbeck has described? Or maybe not?

I like really like the "drag and drop" flexibility to arrange a custom display order on any selected page (including Tags). Default alphabetical, with the ability to reorder, would be excellent, but if this was too difficult to achieve, then I would prefer to at least have the 'drag and drop' reordering than not, so I can control the order.

(Yes, short-term, it has messed up the display of some of my carefully sorted Genres and Tags, but long-term, I think it would be most useful to keep.)

I don't quite understand why "it's unnecessary" for Tags to have the 'drag and drop' sort? @Luke is that what you mean? (I might be misunderstanding?)  If Tags are designed to appear in the order added, then every time I add a new Tag, it will be 'out of order' if it is just displayed last. Would I then need to remove and replace all the Tags to achieve a preferred order?

I hope this isn't a case of forward one step and then backwards two? Adding Tags should be easy and sorting them should be too!

OK yes I can confirm that the metadata editor was previously sorting them, however, this was incorrect behavior because the order did not match the rest of the system. I don't think it would make sense to have the editor display a sorted list but then see an unsorted list when looking at the actual video screen.

So if we're going to start sorting tags alphabetically, then it should happen in a way that is applied everywhere, and if we do this, then manual drag handles won't be necessary.

This explains it better - thanks!

I'm not greatly fussed myself about "alphabetical" vs "drag and drop" and can adapt my Tags accordingly.

As long as there is a consistent approach to sorting and displaying, then it will be easier to understand and easier work with.

Agreed - but please consider that some peoples tags are in that order for a reason - they put primary tags at the start for example and secondary tags later on.

I'd suggest making  'sorting' of the tags a per library option and this is then reflected in the display, metadata and/or filters.

I have an idea.... Put the way it was just a few weeks ago. Was it such a problem that people were rioting in the streets?

Would tend to agree - if it ain't broke and nobody is complaining - then there are 1001 other things that do need looking at ...

This is just UN FREAKING BELIEVABLE. Why would the dialog box options be different depending on which view you use????????????????????????????????????????????

First is in Movies.......Handles visible

Second is Search, same movie, Edit Metadata, No Handles.

So we can't search for a movie and change the Tags???? Or seeing how you all operate I guess you'll remove ALL the handles as punishment for questioning the EMBY Gods of Programming.

You've took a decent program and pretty much ruined it.

Hi, the drag handles are being removed like I mentioned earlier. The right solution to this is to just ensure that the tags are sorted consistently everywhere that you see them.

Jesus. There is no sort except to enter them in the order you want. And what the crap does one do when a new one is added a year later? Delete them and add all again. In case you forgot you not only removed the sort you removed the handles. I would really really like to say exactly what kind of trash I think this is.

Hi, the beta server has been updated to auto-sort tags alphabetically whenever you save them. This way if they're always sorted alphabetically, you don't need drag handles.

We'll look into if we can backport this change to 4.8 stable. Thanks.

@LukePlease take the time to think about implications of doing things like this without giving options or considering defaults.

I do NOT want my tags sorted alphabetically thanks - I specifically add them (via Plugins) in a specific order so they show that way in the item.

If you want to add the OPTION of sorting the tags then that's fine - but please make it a per library option.  Default as sorted if you like.

Where I don't want a specific order - say home videos - then sorting Alphabetically would be nice addition.

If you are talking about the DISPLAY of tags (for filters, metadata etc, then sorted alphabetically is the better option I agree).

Thanks.

I prefer sorted but I totally get what you say. I have a spreadsheet with 46,000 tags. Giving an option or at least handles is good by me.

@LukeI stumbled on a meatball menu with move up or move down. The problem is it deselects the tag after 1 move. If you're trying to add 1 and move to the top of 10 tags without handles it's a nightmare.

? Alphabetically just destroyed my masterpiece and is a terrible idea. I use tags mostly for cinema intros to make double features and sorting alphabetically creates a situation that all tags need to be named alphabetically and that means naming them to words/names that does not match what it really is. This is an absolute killer to appease those that want everything automatic!

Hi, can you please show us what exactly you mean (with screenshots), so that we can understand why you need a specific order? Thanks.

The tags are written a bit different than the original as work to get it in the right order... all planned and ready but not really edited yet.

Right but my question is what problem is caused by having the tags in one order vs another?

Because I want all files to play in the correct order that I select.. Look at the file name I wrote on the double Feature and the tags in the editor - different order.

The way I want it and had it:

trailer

trailer

Stooges

Bowery boys

Feature film

=========================

the editor shows:

trailer

stooges

blues busters

countdown

trailer

Feature Film

=======================

And Blues Busters would have been before the stooges but the minor edit changed that.

How does this affect play order?

Because it plays it in alphabetical order instead of the order I originally dragged it to.
