Emby Theatre suddenly dropping frames - noticeable during playback

Recommended Posts

Hi, hope someone can help. Emby Theatre had been flawless for years but all of a sudden I'm getting problems where the movie stutters for a couple of seconds, usually after about 10 mins. This repeats at intervals during the movie. Its very annoying as this never happened before. I changed settings etc. but to no avail. It happens on 4K and 1080p content. Graphics card is NVIDIA GT640 and sound outputs to Denon amp. Please find logs attached and picture of stats on Emby Theatre just after what I described has occured. Cant figure out whats cauing it.

Use gpu-next instead of gpu

Looking at your stats, hardware acceleration appears to be failing, or being misreported

Frame dropping occurs no matter what selections I make for renderer and acceleration. Could the graphics card be an issue? It started to do this completely out of the blue. What’s the solution if hardware acceleration is failing?

Seems everything ok playing movies in standalone players

SPENT HOURS ON THIS BUT CANT FIGURE IT OUT. SAME ISSUE OF STUTTER NO MATTER WHAT SETTINGS I USE

stats show hardware acceleration as blank or no for 4K HEVC files?? Why would this be the case. 1080P H264 files show hardware acceleration as working??

Any ideas. Very frustrating. Could do with the new app now

No stutter present when file played in standalone mpv player. Any ideas??

OK, the emby logs are no help here. So let's use the stats, that's mpv. Please set video output to gpu-next and hardware acceleration to Auto. Reproduce the issue and post the screenshot of the stats. Don't do anything else.

There's the answer - hardware acceleration is failing. So we need to find the cause. You said this just started to happen. Did you just update your gpu driver? The drive is what provides pixel format support. You said that other videos play fine, so that implies that hardware pixel format support for this video has somehow been lost. Try a different driver.

gpu driver for nvidia geforce was updated, do i need to roll back??

I would try that

rolled back gpu drivers, hardware acceleration still comes up as no , same as pictures above. anything else needs looking at??

No issues when I use mpv as a standalone player, so is Emby Theater the problem??

Gonna need a log from mpv. Read this and create an mpv.conf, then add the line:

log-file=" "

Between the speech marks add the address where to save it, and include the file name.

example:

log-file="C:\Users\username\Documents\mpv logs\log.txt"

Play the video and recreate the issue only once, then attach the log here

Please find mpc.clog.txtonf log attached. Watched movie last night with mpv standalone player and it was perfect. Using Emby Theatre , still get stuttering every 10-15 mins.

Looks like your hardware doesn't support the pixel format. mpv throws everything it can at it, but they all fail and it falls back to software decoding.

When you play it in the standalone, I suspect that you haven't configured it and it is using the default of software decoding. You can see that if you hit shift+i.

Why doesn't it drop frames in the standalone? Most likely because it doesn't have electron clamped to it and there's less processing for CPU to handle.

The video is 10 bit, and if you research your GPU, I suspect that it doesn't support it.

It’s strange that it only started doing this a couple of weeks ago. Same hardware. So why now?   Would a better GPU solve this?  Or will new Emby app/theatre stop using electron?
