Amadeus1101 1 Posted March 9, 2024 Posted March 9, 2024 Hi I want to generat video preview thumbnails every 10 ceconds, then I enabled the preview thumbnail feature with these settings After the scheduled task finished, most of files it works well, but some of them doesn't show me any previews which shorter than 5 minutes in runtime. Are there any way to generat preview thumbnails for videos shorter than 5 minutes Thanks in advance for any help! 1

When you scrub videos emby generates a thumbnail in realtime, however this feature is disabled for all videos under 5 minutes. I believe that's what he meant. (pic for reference) I don't know why this limitation exists, but I hope it could be removed as well, especially in this age of tiktoks and shorts. I have thousands of shorter videos and would love to scrub through them quickly. Edited October 18, 2024 by nahmean
Carlo 4560 Posted October 20, 2024 Posted October 20, 2024 5 Minutes was probably chosen as a good all-around value as it helps stop generation for things like trailers. I'd also suspect the usefulness of previews becomes less and less the shorter the duration of the video is. As a work-around, you could script this to happen out-side of Emby Server easily for any folder containing a video file with a bif file present. @LukeCould we make this a configurable option per library with the option of only generating the index on the main video as well as for any video file? 3

luser 37 Posted August 17, 2025 Posted August 17, 2025 Has anyone found a workaround for this? To summarize the issue... Issue For videos shorter than 5 minutes, "Video Preview Thumbnails" aren't displayed when hovering over the progress bar. However, a valid BIF file IS generated for the file. Therefore, there seems to be some simple logic, such as "if video duration < 5 min, don't display preview images", disabling the display of images. It's already odd that these images aren't shown for videos shorter than 5 minutes. But the fact that processing power is used to generate a BIF file that's never utilized makes this even worse. Suggested Fix Remove the logic that disables the display of "Video Preview Thumbnails". If "Video Preview Thumbnails" exist for a video, they should always be displayed.
