Scan Media Library: What exactly should this task be doing?

I don't know man.  I assume backlogs don't survive server reboots because scheduled tasks never immediately fired or resumed after any server reboot.

NOOO!!! I was reading the whole convo at the edge of my seat as I have EXACT the same problem I am struggling with for days now. Ever since I enabled Episodes Intros and 10-second thumbnails my TV library scans take around 30 minutes with the same log entries as OP:

Its a heavy and time consuming task.

When its done it should go back to normal, did you enable it for all libraries at the same time ?

Over past couple of days I have already done single library scans, searching for missing metadata and extracting thumbnails. Some of that took awhile but they all finished, Did also quite a lot server rebooting. So I figured all was scanned back and forth by now. But as you can see with every single scan (right click on TV Show library -> Scan media library) it takes around 30 minutes now as Emby is writing changes in nfo for some reason. I am wondering how come there are any changes between library scans when I wait for it to finish and run it again after couple of minutes?

Hi, I would try configuring those features to only run during their scheduled tasks and not the library scan. They will cause scans to take longer.

But what's the reason for long scans now when everything is turned off? Why those metadatas are being overwritten with every scan and should I just leave it and hope it'll go back to normal on it's own one day?

I'm officially loosing my mind over this. I thought maybe Syncthing is messing with, I don't know, timestamps so they seem new to Emby (I sync my whole libraries'' jpg, srt  and nfo files to external drive, just in case something happens - but still, these are Send Only) but nothing changed and besides, I also sync other movie libraries but they scan normally . Than I deselected all ticks from TV Shows library  and run the scan; that took 30 seconds. Than I ticked metadata for TVDB for episodes and seasons, library scan, 30 seconds. Than I ticked Metadata Readers: nfo and boom, a flood of those and half an hour library scan:

After it finished I immediately pressed to scan library again and got the same result, same files (all episodes in my TV Shows I guess) are been marked as changed and rewritten again.

I don't use any other nfo providers like TinyMediaManager, Emby is my only file manager, nfo reader, media player and what not. I thought of deleting all cache and recreate that but not sure if that would do more harm than good. 

Why does Emby thinks that all my nfo files changed and need to rewrite them with every single scan?

Run another Scan Media Library right after and compared the results. The same nfo files are marked as 'changed' (i.e. Dexter or Rome ) and Emby is rewriting them (although my file manager shows the date that these nfo files are original from the time I added the series) . Mind boggling.

Those are likely Date Created - what does Date Modified column show?

My bad, you're right. Checked in windows file explorer and it confirms the file is getting rewritten with every scan. But why?

I honestly couldn't say, save some backlog of tasks or some other software modifying those NFOs.

However, looking at your server log, which covers the timeframe 2024-05-25 22:02:16 to 2024-05-25 22:30:37 (and has a lot shows/seasons/episodes scanned/NFOs rewritten), it is apparent those Dexter episodes visible in your last screenshot - as the only guidance currently available - (Dexter S01E01 to So1E06) are not being rescanned/NFOs rewritten (actually first 9 episodes of season 1 haven't) - also confirmed by their timestamp which is 25.05.2024 20:24 i.e. modified before last scan for which log was provided, meaning not all of your shows/episodes have been touched, and that fact goes in favor of backlog of tasks theory. If you're absolutely certain that no other software touches those files and there's no pending tasks, run the scan again and post log so those two logs can be compared and maybe something glimpsed.

There you go, another log as I run library scan consequently now for 3 days in a row  as soon as as the last  one finishes (more or less). I am 99% sure that nothing overwrites the nfo's and I keep scanning the library because as the OP of this post said, it magically got back to normal after some time. Strange thing I've noticed is that some nfo's are still 'untouched' by the scan and remain with the date the library was created (13.05.2024 - when I moved my server from Synology NAS to Windows, but the media files remind at the NAS and just the access paths were changed so no changes in nfo files)

while same episodes have not being touched (S01E01 to S01E09).

Random check on few other TV shows shows (lol, double "shows") same occurrence, Emby seeing all the same shows/seasons/episodes as being reported changed.

I'm really having trouble wrapping my head around this case.

The server thinks your nfo files have changed and therefore starts refreshing metadata to react to that.

 If you have other software writing nfo files such as sonar, try turning that off.

So, I have absolutely no idea what caused that and how it got fixed but it did. I was struggling with it from the very morning - all metadata was replaced with every scan. I am curating all my media manually and I don't have any of the -arr programs but @Luke's suggestion got me thinking. I turned off all 25 docker containsrs I have  on my Synology, turned off all background services on my PC except leaving just Emby Server and Windows Defender:) plus I uninstalled Reports and Playback Reporting plugins as they caused some issues in the past for other users. But that didn't do anything.

Than around noon I begun testing on small new libraries and finally got one working correctly - the one I set up on my PC directly. I then set the library on external SSD that first I connected to my NAS and that behaved as predicted, all metadata being replaced. But with the same SSD pluged into PC all metadata were working . So at least I narrowed that to the fact that it's something with NAS. Since than I am not quite sure what helped since I went through a lot of NAS's settings toggling them on and off but my prime suspect (since timestamps were an issue) is that there was some sort of desynchronization between my Synology and PC (if that make sense and is even possible).

I refreshed both time settings on both machines, run the library scan and as I saw it hung on 90% I checked the logs and saw it was refreshing metadata again. Pissed off I took my dog for a walk and after I came back the scan was over. I hit the scan again and boom... 60 seconds and scanned finished (couldn't believe it then but I scanned that again and again fir an hour now and it's all good). Then I did the scan for every other library. Initially first scan was rewriting metadata but 2nd was acting normal again.

So the solution is is either 4 hour nap, walking your dog or time settings on your machines. Hope the problem is solved.
