Bingie 99 Posted March 6, 2024 Posted March 6, 2024 Hi all, I tried TrueNAS SCALE when it first came out two years ago, but they were still working out some kinks in the armor, so I went with windoze 10 as host OS. I just upgraded my NAS hardware (new cpu and nvme) but windoze 11 is having some issues, so I'm ready to try a free linux NAS OS again. How is TrueNAS SCALE today? Anyone running the "Emby for TrueNAS SCALE" app on it? Any issues? I have the Intel® Core™ i7-11700 (with integrated GPU), want to make sure Emby on TNS can use it to transcode, that's a must. Thanks
Bingie 99 Posted March 6, 2024 Author Posted March 6, 2024 I do have an available pcie slot, so I can purchase a separate gpu card if I have to, if it can be safely passed thru to the emby app. I'd prefer to use the integrated gpu if it works though.
Q-Droid 989 Posted March 6, 2024 Posted March 6, 2024 For what truenas is/does and what you might want it for I say try OMV or stick to a standard distro unless you really really want dashboards and graphs and gizmos.
Bingie 99 Posted March 6, 2024 Author Posted March 6, 2024 Thanks, yeah I'm looking at OMV again right now. Probably a better fit. Anyone running Emby on OMV these days? Any big issues? Any gpu for transcoding issues?
KneelBeforeZod 13 Posted August 11, 2024 Posted August 11, 2024 I have been using Emby on TrueNAS SCALE for a year or so now. It's been fantastic and I bought a lifetime licence. TrueNAS SCALE is enterprise-grade and solid and Emby on that platform is really "just" the application packed up for Docker. The only issue at the moment is that the TrueNAS developers have removed the Truecharts catalogue from which Emby was installed, and AFAIK there is no replacement mechanism for installing Emby into TrueNAS SCALE - but correct me if I am wrong. There really no downsides to installing Emby into TrueNAS SCALE IMO 1
bacardi8 19 Posted August 15, 2024 Posted August 15, 2024 I can only agree, it runs amazing on Scale. Regarding "KneelBeforeZod's" mentioned issue with Truecharts apps, is not an issue itself. The situation here is that he has installed the app from the Truecharts catalog and not from the official catalog. I had that myself also, but after the removal of Truecharts apps in Scale, I simply uninstalled the Truecharts Emby app, removed the Truecharts catalog, and reinstalled the Emby app from the official catalog, very easy and also future proof for next big Scale update in coming October. Of course you need to load all your media and rescan it again, but if you have your media structured then this is not a big deal. And again, Emby runs great on Scale. 2
KneelBeforeZod 13 Posted August 17, 2024 Posted August 17, 2024 Thanks @bacardi8 I did install Emby from the Truecharts catalogue. I have the Emby config directory mapped to a location outside the Docker container and that;s backed-up. So I should be able to, as you say, uninstall Truecharts catalogue Emby, install official catalogue Emby and point the config directory to the same location and retain all the metadata. Sound good? If that fails, the export/import plugin can be used to retain the config and I can rescan all the well structured media (although I really don't want to set up all the libraries etc again).
bacardi8 19 Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 Hello, You could try that, I never tried this myself so I can't say if it will work or not. I simply started over again after installing the official app. But anyway, if media is structured it's easy to add and scan again. ( I have all metadata saved as nfo in each media folder itself) Sometimes I actually find it nice to do, in case there is something you wanna change/remove or whatever, then it is time to do that now.
