How to edit "Date Added" and get it to effect sort order

Recommended Posts

Hi.  I want changes made to movies (such as adding a 4K copy) to effect the sort order by changing the date added.  I manually updated the "Date Added" in the emby GUI "edit metadata" tool for both copies of the movie.  That didnt effect it.  I then found the NFO had a "data added" of 2017 so I edited the NFO with notepadd++ but still no effect.  The data added in the metadata shows todays date yet Emby still isnt pushing this movie to the top of the list.  What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,

HI, what makes you think this didn't affect it?

The movie is nowhere near the top of my list when I sort by date added.

Well.....while taking snips to attach here for you I figured out the problem.  In the networking world we would call this a layer 8 problem......  When I noticed the file wasn't at the top I searched for it and then edited the "top result" instead of switching over to the movie tab.  I edited the metadata of the actual movie and now the problem is fixed.  I'm still curious why manually editing the NFO files in the same folder as the MKV's didn't fix the issue.

Hi, the search feature does not incorporate the date added value in to the results or the sorting of the results.

What I would suggest instead to test is going to your movies library and explicitly sorting by date added. That will be the best way to see the changes reflected.

Emby reads or creates the .nfo on import. It does not use them any further than that. (ie it won't update metadata in its db from changes to nfo files unless you remove and re-add the media and have the nfo reader turned on)

They're more for external programs to read and understand that emby identities the media as; or to tell emby what a new piece of medias metadata is

Hi, actually it will, on the next library scan or via the real-time monitor.

date added is just one exception though. that is only read on import only.

Item went from being last at item 136 to number 1 when I changed the date from 1942 to 2024 as my date added was there Premiere date.  Only tested changing via UI.

Sorted by date added

nfo

  <dateadded>2024-02-27 00:00:00</dateadded>

Now changed nfo back to 1942

  <dateadded>1942-04-08 00:00:00</dateadded>

RTM caught the change

Yea I did and it wasnt being added to the top.  What I'm saying is I knew I needed to edit the "date added field" and I searched for the title instead of sorting by Title and scrolling to the movie.  For example, in the below 2 attachments the first result is not the same as the result under the "movies" tab within the search result.  Updated the object under the "Top Results" section is not updating the movie shown in my library.  When I shift over to the result under "movies" and edit that one, its actually updating the file in my library and then pushing it to the top.  I dont know what the first object is.  When I click it its still pointing to my MKV files yet if I manually scroll through my library there is only 1 Interstellar entry and its the second object (different cover art)

Do you have more than one copy of that movie?

Replicated with multi-version split apart changed image on one and rejoined.  Sort of to be expected depending on what item become primary.  Possibly a cached image issue.

I do.  Both within the same folder called "Interstellar" and one titled "Interstellar - 1080p" and another titled "Interstellar - 4K"

I assumed this was operator error but the more I mess with it the more I'm not sure what the search results are actually showing me.  As you can now see the search results still show me 2 different objects (different cover art) if I select "Top Results" vs "Movies".  However if I sort by title and manually scroll to the movie there is only 1 with both files contained and select-able via the version dropbox.

Here are some interesting finds.  Both results when selected are referencing the same MKV files but they have different time stamps.  Final picture shows only the 1 when you browse by title

This jives.  While these titles do now have multiple versions they didnt previously.  Originally only a 1080p version.  I put them in folders and renamed them in accordance with the Emby documentation and added the 4K files via the naming convention.  So yea these were previously single version movies but now are combined.

Do you save images with media?

But for my example you look in browser console and see each with a different itemnumber.

I used to be it drove me crazy.  Instead I save images in a folder called "Emby Data".  So my movies are stored in \\truenas\MoviesMKV   (with very few subfolders) and emby data is \\truenas\MoviesMKV\Emby Data.   If all my movies were in their own folder I could tolerate it.  Just never went through the trouble of creating folders for 1000+ movies.
