Sorry, I don't understand what you're saying. Could you be clearer? LITERALLY what mouse clicks will get a File Folder to rescan and UPDATE embedded metadata?

Full test

Added comment tag to all the tracks of an album.

went to Music folder view AC/DC folder and did a Scan Library files.  But you can do the scan a different level.

navigated to track via folder view.

Now removing existing data is a little different and requires a metadata Refresh

went to mp3tag and removed comment and Refreshed the specific album.

Really don't know how to make it any more specific.

Thank you very much @Happy2Playfor the detailed, specific example. Aha - so now I see that Emby is showing DIFFERENT three-dot menus depending on view/level. Clicking three-dot menu at the top level of a Artist Folder (which is what I was doing, given @Luke's guidance) pops up only the View choices, not the data menu that includes Scan Library Files and Refresh Metadata:

After following your example on my own data, it's clear that updating only affects some categories of metadata: rescan and metadata refresh on one album within a "perfectly organized" artist directory will trigger only a partial refresh of all albums in that file directory, i.e. only add new metadata (despite selecting "Replace all metadata"), but not removing or updating existing metadata (like removing a genre). I guess it's good that I now understand how to avoid SOME full library rescans, but this is inconsistent, poorly labelled, poorly documented behavior from Emby that I hope they will rationalize and communicate better.

Updating/changing metadata is a simple scan but clearing/completely removing fields requires refreshing as that is the only way to clear populated database fields.

Which takes us back to the start of this thread and so many others over the last year or two: Emby should provide some way (which should be doable with the highly-touted new database structure?) to truly, fully edit/delete metadata for a full Album or Album Artist without requiring a multi-hour "refresh metadata" of an entire library or a track-by-track manual refresh.
