GravityRZ 3 Posted February 6, 2024 Posted February 6, 2024 before 4.8.0.80 i could add mp4 movies in a folder and it was recognised and a thumbnail was generated now in 4.8.0.80 it is not working anymore i can scan libraries, refresh metadata but no main thumbnail is added
Solution Happy2Play 9780 Posted February 6, 2024 Solution Posted February 6, 2024 Probably need to see the server log for this item Refresh. Have you verified the Library settings has Image Capture enabled? 1
GravityRZ 3 Posted February 6, 2024 Author Posted February 6, 2024 now that was good info. thanks for your help i checked everything but not that setting because i had to scroll all the way down. all my videos have thumbnails installed(by using previous version) so obviously the setting was on. strange that it was turned off after the upgrade
GravityRZ 3 Posted February 6, 2024 Author Posted February 6, 2024 (edited) ok spoke to soon it is generating a thumbnail but only one with a really small size 600x336 normally it should generate a thumbnail with the size of the video resolution 3840x2160 any idea why it is down that Edited February 6, 2024 by GravityRZ

Happy2Play 9780 Posted February 6, 2024 Posted February 6, 2024 @Lukedid something change in the image quality/resolution here? "scale=trunc(min(max(iw\,ih*dar)\,600)/2)*2:trunc(ow/dar/2)*2,thumbnail=24" As copying the same file that has a 1920x1080 image now gets same as above 600x336. Same with deleting current image and refreshing gets lower resolution image.
GravityRZ 3 Posted February 6, 2024 Author Posted February 6, 2024 that is exactly my problem. the old movie had 3840x2160, after refresh it's 600x336 you will notice this when you display it on a tv screen. this thumbnail image is also used as background and believe me 600x336 does not look good on a 4k tv
Luke 42077 Posted February 6, 2024 Posted February 6, 2024 Possibly, yes. But you don't need this extracted at 4K as Emby will never display it at that size. This thumbnail is only needed for display in lists and so if you extract at 4K then it's just going to cause more work for the server to constantly have to downsize to smaller sizes.

Luke 42077 Posted February 6, 2024 Posted February 6, 2024 OK forgot about that. We can look at removing the limit but just to answer the original question, it's not a new change. We've had that 600 limit in place for years.

Luke 42077 Posted February 6, 2024 Posted February 6, 2024 Just now, Happy2Play said: Interesting as all my test items have images same resolution as video. Well I didn't look back forever but it's been in the code for at least 3-4 years.

Negative i just recently started using emby about a month ago all my thumbnails have the same size as the movies i was using previous version 4.7.14 i believe i checked both my photo and video folder and they all have thumbnails as big as the original size the thumbnail is saved as primary, the rest is empty
Luke 42077 Posted February 6, 2024 Posted February 6, 2024 it's not a new change i can assure. But we can look at removing the limit.
GravityRZ 3 Posted February 6, 2024 Author Posted February 6, 2024 3 minutes ago, Luke said: it's not a new change i can assure. But we can look at removing the limit. that scares me because obviously if the limit was in place or not it was saving thumbnails with the size of the original image/video. we got this confirmed from 2 different users(me and Happy2Play) could it be that the limit was in place but was not working for the home video &Photo's library?
Luke 42077 Posted February 6, 2024 Posted February 6, 2024 There are multiple techniques for extraction depending on the format of the video, so it's possible that not all of them have this limit.
Happy2Play 9780 Posted February 6, 2024 Posted February 6, 2024 yes I can confirm 4.7 and 4.8 have different behavior when it comes to these extracted images. But the extraction code is the same on both so is has to be somewhere in the save process.
GravityRZ 3 Posted February 6, 2024 Author Posted February 6, 2024 ok mkv, mp4, iso and jpg seem to use the original size(before the update)
GravityRZ 3 Posted February 7, 2024 Author Posted February 7, 2024 just aded something to think about when i was running 4.7.14(the latest version before 4.8.0.80) the image capture switch was off but it still created thumbnails the size of the resoloution of the photo/video. then i switched to 4.8.0.80, added a movie just to find out no thumbnail image was created anymore could it be that thumbnail extraction in the old release was done with high resolution when the switch was off and low res(600x336) when the swich was on and that they fixed this bug. eg:in the new version no thumbnsail is created when the switch is off and 600x336 when the switch is on. this would explain that the 600x336 is in place for a long time(but was not honoured when the switch was off) anyway if you have a beta release to test let me know (synology X64)
Happy2Play 9780 Posted May 7, 2024 Posted May 7, 2024 You will have to Refresh with replace images but please retest in 4.8.6.0. Extract video images at full resolution 1

GravityRZ 3 Posted June 18, 2024 Author Posted June 18, 2024 (edited) the thumbnails are generated at full res but somehow it looks like the screen is dull please look at the before and after photo's and also notice the brightness off the chapter thumnails on the bottom the chapter thumbnails are still as bright but the main thumbnail(the big one) changed in brightness also with version 4.7.14 the image was displayed full screen and the chapter thumbnails were displayend on top. now the big one has its own space and does not strech the complete screen i liked the old setup better. please correct this if you can Edited June 18, 2024 by GravityRZ

I think it's just the background behind them that is different.
GravityRZ 3 Posted June 20, 2024 Author Posted June 20, 2024 no it is not. in the first picture the background is shown stretched full screen and the background behinmd the chapters is blurred. in the second screen the picture is resized vertically until it reaches the chapters and thus creating black vertical bars left and right. eg the way the picture is displayed has changed. please lok at the changelog. something must have changed
SamES 1056 Posted July 13, 2024 Posted July 13, 2024 (edited) When the only image provided is a poster, it will be displayed using the poster aspect ratio with black bars on the side. On the web app, it is possible to do that in a way that extends to the bottom of the screen and renders beneath the chapter images. On AppleTV, we can only render a poster this way in the top section as only background images can render beneath other rows. This also means the image will appear narrower on screen as it is not as tall. If we use the poster as a background, it will stretch and fill the full screen like your first image, but it will distort images that aren't 16:9. This is why it was changed. We also need to consider live tv programs and other media types where we only have poster images. In essence, a poster will be displayed as a poster, with black bars if necessary. To achieve your result, try setting a backdrop image instead (or as well as) a poster. If there are both, it will set the backdrop as the background and ignore the poster. Just be aware that if the image is not 16:9 it will be stretched (and possibly distorted) to fill the full screen. Edited July 13, 2024 by SamES
