Recording of OTA ending at random times

Recommended Posts

After the 4.8.0.80 update, I am now experiencing a new problem.  Scheduled recording of OTA programs are ending at random times.  Some work with no issue, others are ending at random times.  Below is the log file for a program that ended after only 17 minutes.

I am still experimenting with different options to see if I can narrow down the problem.

Recordings have been occurring prior to the update with no issue.  No hardware changes have been made.
System consists of a dedicated Windows PC running Emby 4.8.0.80.
2 HDHomeRun OTA receivers
Recordings are stored temporarily on a Drive with approximately 400 Gb of free space.  Once capture is completed, they are moved to a Drive with over 2Tb of space.  Typical recording of an hour occupies between 2-4 Gbs of storage.

When time permits, I will run a test with clean log files to provide.

This recording was scheduled to take place at 17:00 and continue until 17:30.

Getting a similar issue - Live TV just cuts off randomly (no particular time or show).  Logs show something similar, except no disk space tasks.

Samsung TV - QN55Q70RAFXZA - client 1.7.4

Server - 4.8.0.80

Spent a few hours this morning playing with Live OTA TV.  Some set-up information:

Emby 4.8.0.80
Machine - 12th Gen Intel Core i5-12400, 16Gb Ram, Windows 11 Home 22H2
HDHomeRun Connect Quatro with firmware 20231214  - 192.168.1.66  (I believe this is the tuner being used)
HDHomeRun Flex 4K with firmware SD20230420 - IP 192.168.1.67

Streaming Device - Roku Streaming Stick+ with Emby SG 4.1.3 over wifi connection.

These tests were all run over my local network.

I started watching channel 3.1 at approximately 7:53.  According to the guide, this program was a one hour show (local morning news).  At 8:52 the program was closed by Emby and I was returned to the guide.

At 8:57 I selected channel 8.1 and began streaming.  Guide showed the remaining few minutes of the current program with the next show of 30 minutes (This Old House).  The next show was also a 30 minute show (Ask This Old House).  This Old House played without incident until 9:29 at which time the program was closed by Emby and I was returned to the guide.

I reselected 8.1, watched the last few seconds of This Old House and began watching Ask This Old House.  Again, the program played with no incident until just before 10:00 when the "Are you still watching" prompt appeared.  Without entry, I was once again returned to the guide.

Problems:

1.  First show was stopped without input from me.  It should not have been due to an "Are you still watching" prompt.  There was no prompt.
2.  Second show was stopped without input from me.  It should not have been due to an "Are you still watching" prompt. There was no prompt.
3.  Third show was ended due to an "Are you still watching" prompt after what could be perceived as only the second show.

As stated earlier (but not in these log files), there have also been scheduled recordings that have ended at random times.  A 30 minute show recorded a total of 7 minutes.  An hour long program made it through 27 minutes before it ended.

I hope these files help in tracking this problem down.  I have added the approximate time to the ffmpeg log file names to hopefully clarify.

Prior to the update to 4.8.0.80 all live streaming and recording had worked without incident.

Thank you

Sounds very similar to what I'm experiencing:

Same problem for me with recording.

Same configuration

I noticed my recording failed after 5 minutes last night randomly. I had upgraded to the latest version earlier today and this was my first recording since upgrade

I set up a series of different shows of different duration.  A few back to back 30 minute shows, a 2 1/2 hour show, an hour show and then a few more 30 minute shows.  Jumped around to different channels.

Only a few of the shows recorded the full duration.  The 2 1/2 hour movie recorded a total of 25 minutes.  2 shows did not even start recording.

Nothing is appearing on the dashboard to indicate the activity when a program is recording.

I would like to setup an Emby server on a different computer for the purpose of recording live TV only.  I grabbed the package 4.7.14 from Github and went to install.  Unfortunately, before the basics can be set-up, the server pulls the 4.8.0.80 update.  Upon restart of Emby, I now have 4.8.0.80.

I have read that rolling back to the system.old files will end well.

Suggestions on getting a second server established so that recording can move forward???

I setup recordings overnight.  Different shows, different durations, different channels.  Very disappointed to find that only 3 of the 21 shows actually recorded to completion.

I have setup another instance of Emby 4.17.14 on an older machine as a back-up capture device.

Hi, yes we've found something related to this and will be getting the fix out in a 4.8.1 release. Thanks.

I have only started testing recordings. Today I had one fail with the error message below. I cannot yet tell whether this is an emby or a provider issue.

This is different and appears to be an error response sent back by the provider.

Thanks @Luke. Then let close this rabbit hole.

I personally would like to keep this rabbit hole going a little deeper.  I am not trying to get me OTA from an IPTV provider, but from an HDHomeRun device on my network.

Lets keep digging as this is not a good thing.

Hi, yes once we get some feedback on it, then we'll backport it and push out a 4.8.1 release. Thanks.

Sorry @Scott D, you misunderstood. I meant close *MY* rabbit hole so they can fix your issue. My issue is not related and should be handled in a separate thread if I can find a way to reproduce. @Lukeis likely right that this is a provider issue rather than a bug in the new version of emby.

No worries.  I did not want the misunderstanding to be made be the developers.

Running Live TV for about 3 hours now, no sudden drops.

Posted

Thanks for reporting I will test it now.  Since you tested it for 3 hours that gives me confidence that it is fixed. As I had the issue almost immediately.

Posted

Hitting 6 hours now.  I haven't tried a recording yet, but I think it should be fixed.

Posted

I recorded 8 recordings so far so good. Under the 4.8 6 of them would be short so it is looking as you say fixed.  I will continue recording another 8 recording just to make sure.
