Emby playing a few secs of episode and skipping to next

This behavior is happening on both TCL TVs. The only way to get it to play is lower video quality to force transcoding. These files are ripped directly from disc. For reference I used MakeMKV to rip The Office and that series works without this issue. I then ripped Friends and this behavior is happening. I have little knowledge of video formats and such so any help in identifying the issue would be helpful. If I have to transcode the entire series that will be fine. I just need to know exactly what is wrong so I can get this fixed and move my TVs back to auto video quality.

Log has been sent. For reference it will only play the file for about 2 seconds before going to the next episode. And without stopping it, it will go through all the episodes just like that

Okay, this is going to be an issue with how the items were ripped. I think the duration information in the headers is incorrect or incomplete and this tricks the Roku player into thinking the item is finished.

Can you try remuxing one of the item with mkvtoolnix and see if that makes it play properly?

So that seems to have fixed it. Just did the remux without changing any settings. Time to figure out how to automate that. Thanks!

Are you tweaking a lot of settings in makemkv? I'm not sure what is causing it to goof up but I've always found makemkv to be just a point, click and it works type of thing.

If you just want to remux what you already have automatically, then just use mkvmerge (part of the mkvtoolnix collection)

mkvmerge -o output.mkv input.mkv

You can use pretty much use any input file format (mkv,mp4,ts etc) and mkvmerge will sort it out for you and put in a new mkv container. Note it just remuxes it to the container - it doesn't attempt to 'encode' or do anything with the contents (in it's simplest form above anyway) - thus all tracks are remuxed 'as is'.

There are also mkvmerge GUI's/batch processing tools out there if you have lots of files to convert.

Good question - I'd need a copy of an offending file to look at - but ripping the m2ts, especially if it has conditional branching may lead to corruption.

TLC TV's would be Roku no? Roku tends to have problems with PGS subtitles, and exhibits exactly the behaviour the OP described.

I have used PGS on mulitple occasions without issue.

Roku doesn't support PGS.

The server burns them in with transcoding and the Roku is never even aware that there is a subtitle track, even though you can see them on screen.

How big is a single episode rip ? I need the original rip, if you try and cut a section of it - it will likely fix the problem in doing so ...

From my experience with makemkv, any problems will have come from the original source material.

What can happen is that different tracks (video, audio, subs) can have different lengths and this can cause problems on playback. From my pretty extensive experience it’s exceptionally rare and not worth worrying about unless you hit it. Remuxing will fix it as long as the video is the longest track.

Did you figure out how to automate it? If not, how are you at scripting? I have a Python script that I use that will scan a directory for any .mp4 or .ts files (including sub folders) and writes a .bat file that will use FFMPEG to cut the first 7 seconds and the last 5 seconds of a video. (I use it on my Playon files)

It would be fairly simple to edit it to do whatever process you want on your files.

I was mistaken as the problem may be as scb99 described as it was one season of one series that exhibited the problem and remuxing to remove the subtitles fixed the issues.

typically between 1.5GB and 2GB.

Yeah I am using unraid so just installed mkvtoolnix docker and queued them all up and let it run. Only took about an hour or so.
